Job ID360605 LocationTwin Cities Job FamilyEducation-General Full/Part TimeFull-Time Regular/TemporaryRegular Job Code9754 Employee ClassAcad Prof and Admin About the Job The Summer Clinic Supervisor oversees the work of student attorneys representing clients in the active cases of four law school clinics while the law school is on summer break (mid-May to late-August). The Summer Clinic Supervisor must be capable of representing clients in civil matters in federal and state court, in a full-time capacity. The primary responsibility is supervising the work of student attorneys who practice under the state and federal student practice rules, and thus the position is suited for a person interested in working daily with law students. The four clinics for which case supervision is needed are: Child Advocacy-Juvenile Justice, Family Law, Consumer Protection, and Insurance. Responsibilities/Duties: General Case Supervision - 50% Supervise up to four clinic student attorneys in handling cases. Ensure case deadlines are known, plan for and met in each case. Review case files and help student attorneys maintain accurate and complete case documentation and time-keeping. Help student attorneys manage client relationships. Review and approve all written communication by student attorneys to clients, opposing counsel and all external parties. Work with student attorneys to advise clients in negotiations and engage in negotiations with opposing counsel (or pro se opposing parties). Review and approve settlement documents with student attorneys. Ensure compliance by student attorneys with ethical rules. Work productively with the law clinic administrator and administrative staff. Supervise two St. Olaf College interns Work with and coordinate substantial case decisions with school year supervising attorneys, as appropriate. Pretrial Practice Document and Case Planning Supervision- 30% Review and approve the drafting of pleadings, motions and other documents prepared by student attorneys for filing with the courts. Work with the student attorneys to file documents with the court and serve documents on opposing counsel (or pro se opposing parties). Develop and supervise discovery in civil cases, when needed. Court Appearance - 20% Appear in court with student attorneys. Prepare student attorneys for court appearance. Drive student attorneys to court appearances when needed; including in the non-metro area on rare occasion. Qualifications Required Licensed to practice in Minnesota federal and state courts. Familiarity with civil practice. J.D. with at least 4 years of experience, or a combination of practice experience and law school clinical experience. Preferred Familiarity with family law and/or insurance law (also helpful if familiar with criminal practice). Experience or demonstrated interest in working with adult students Experience in a law school clinic.
