As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the Associate Director represents comprehensive college recreation and wellbeing programs and services; establishes strategic goals and objectives, advances department initiatives, assesses outcomes and ensures a high level of service and quality control for all program offerings. The Associate Director for Programs will provide leadership and ensure the professional development of four (4) direct and six (6) indirect reports in a variety of program areas. These areas include Fitness, Intramural Sports, Sport Clubs, and Outdoor Programming. In addition, as one of the largest employers of students on campus, these program areas additionally support hundreds of part-time student-employees annually. Being accessible to staff in case of support, incident or emergency is essential. This position ensures that operations run smoothly while also having a strong commitment to the University's goal of creating a positive and inclusive campus climate by advancing equity and diversity. The Associate Director for Programs reports to the Director of Recreation and Wellness and Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs. The starting salary for this position is $90,000. Work Responsibilities: Leadership + Strategic Planning (60%) Serve on the department Senior Leadership Team, responsible for guiding the overall strategic plan, mission and vision for Recreation and Wellness, in alignment with the Office of Student Affairs priorities. Responsible for recruiting, selecting, training, scheduling, and supervising full-time professional program staff; provide leadership and development; conduct annual performance reviews; guide the Program Directors hiring and development practices with their respective professional staff totaling 10 FTE. Advise and assist staff in the evaluation and reporting of program offerings and performance, including participation, revenue, and student experience and development. Identify and translate existing and new partnerships that can: enhance existing health and wellness services within the department and on campus; elevate the member experience; and enhance internal health and wellness programming. Develop and manage relationships with collaborative partners internal and external to RecWell and Student Affairs to deliver comprehensive recreational and competitive activities to the University community; establish new relationships to enhance program offerings with interests that are synergistic with RecWell and OSA strategic priorities. Serve as a campus consultant and expert for other departments on initiatives related to physical activity, sport and recreation, and other relevant areas as needed. Management / Administrative: (30%) Planning, preparing, and managing annual operating budgets. Procuring funding, personnel, facilities, equipment, and other resources necessary to deliver recreation and wellness programming. Supporting and guiding staff in the development, enforcement, and evaluation of program policies and procedures and assessing and managing risk exposure. Conducting periodic needs assessments to determine gaps in programs and services. Maintain membership and continuing education in professional associations, serving on professional committees and boards, publishing in professional journals, and attending and presenting at professional conferences. Represent University Recreation and Wellness on committees as assigned. Other responsibilities as assigne by the Department Director and Assistant Vice Provost for Student Affairs. Departmental Wellbeing Collaborations: (10%) Responsible for guiding and energizing the University's efforts to improve the health and wellbeing of members of the campus community by serving as a leader of the wellness initiatives for the department, the Office for Student Affairs and the broader University Qualifications Required Qualifications: BA/BS plus at least ten (10) years of relevant work experience Eight (8) years of full time experience developing and managing recreation programs or facilities, preferably in a university setting Five (5) years of experience supervising full time staff Experience developing and managing budgets Excellent interpersonal and communication skills Proven ability to work effectively in a diverse team environment and manage multiple, high priority projects simultaneously Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree in higher education, recreation administration, sports management, exercise science or related field Experience in program management of recreational activities such as competitive sports, fitness, instructional and/or outdoor recreation Leadership experience in management or administration in a collegiate recreation setting Ability to work collaboratively with campus partners (internal and external) to achieve campus-wide wellbeing initiatives Ability to work and actively contribute in a participatory and collegial manner with a leadership team Demonstrated experience managing risk and liability compliance Experience performing and overseeing assessment practices About the Department Recreation & Wellness is a department within the Office of the Vice President of Student Affairs (OSA) at the University of Minnesota. We offer hundreds of recreation, exercise, and sport opportunities for the University community and operate the University Recreation and Wellness Center, University Aquatic Center, University Fieldhouse, St. Paul Gymnasium, Student Recreational Sports Fields and Dome, West Bank Fields, St. Paul Soccer Fields, St. Paul Tennis Courts, and Les Bolstad University Golf Course. Amenities in University Recreation and Wellness indoor facilities include fourteen handball/racquetball courts, eleven squash courts, ten multi-use rooms and studios, six gymnasiums, five swimming pools, three indoor running tracks, and two rock climbing walls. The facilities also offer more than 500 treadmills, exercise bikes, elliptical trainers, weight machines, and other pieces of exercise equipment. University Recreation & Wellness is funded by student fees and revenue generated by the department. The department workforce is approximately 50 full-time staff and 575 student employees.
