Description: Since the mid 1970's, Student Advocates have been the sole University entity charged with representing accused students in University disciplinary processes. Advocates advise and represent students in meetings and hearings, while providing insight into possible outcomes (based on historical precedents). Advocates utilize a student development approach in supporting the students they work with. The Assistant Director of Student Advocacy will serve as the Student Advocacy lead for the unit. The Assistant Director will exhibit expertise in student conduct processes, hearing procedures, and due process rights. The Assistant Director will report directly to the Director of Care and Student Advocate Services. The Assistant Director will be given independence and autonomy to work through cases, ranging in severity from mild to extremely complex. The Assistant Director will serve as an advocate for students who have concerns with scholastic dishonesty, behavioral misconduct, and sexual misconduct. The Assistant Director will work with undergraduate, graduate, and professional student cases. The successful candidate must be interested in balancing students' due process rights and student development outcomes. The Assistant Director will advise and represent students, while providing the students' perspective at disciplinary meetings and hearings. The Assistant Director must familiarize themselves with University conduct proceedings, policies, and Title IX regulations (current and emerging), and apply this information to current proceedings. Additional Information: * The annual salary range is $58,000-$62,000, depending on experience. * Work will be completed in a hybrid environment. * The successful candidate will be eligible for the Regent's Tuition Benefit Program, medical, dental and retirement benefits. Job responsibilities: Student Advocacy (60%): Balance students' due process rights and student development outcomes Meet with students, conduct intakes, and provide guidance about the disciplinary process Develop case strategies with staff Consult with parties and negotiate resolutions Utilize expertise with formal fact-finding processes, including interviewing witnesses, analyzing data, and preparing cases for hearings Apply research skills and understanding of University policies Collaborate with students in formulating and presenting opening statements, cross examinations, and closing statements at hearings Represent students in formal hearing settings, as needed Support student in filing written appeals, as needed Complete case work in independent and autonomous setting Maintain a positive relationship with University staff, faculty, and students Understand the University's reporting structure and work in tandem with the University staff and faculty Outreach, Marketing, and Training (20%): Participate on various committees related to student conduct and the student advocate process Conduct community training sessions detailing the role of the student advocates in the context of the University's disciplinary processes Assist in providing marketing and outreach strategies to educate the University community about the role of student advocates and SAS Collaborate with the Office for Community Standards, the Office of Equal Opportunity and Title IX, and the Office for Student Affairs on individual and institutional conduct issues Administrative Duties (20%): Supervise student worker(s) and/or graduate assistant(s) Manage clien and hearing schedules Schedule and manage meetings with students Create and maintain confidential case files Compile and organize evidence for student cases Assist with annual budgeting and presentation process Provide feedback on unit growth and development Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: BA/BS plus at least 5 years of relevant experience, or master's degree plus at least three years of relevant experience Demonstrated commitment towards diversity, equity, and inclusion work including working with diverse populations of students Ability to work with student conduct processes in a higher education setting Ability to work with college students in distress Strong verbal, written, communication, and interpersonal skills Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree in student affairs, counseling, higher education, or related field 4 years of related professional experience post master's degree Experience with non-clinical case manager and/or student conduct in higher education Ability to adapt advocacy skills to an administrative process Ability to plan, monitor, evaluate, and manage multiple priorities Student intake and management experience Conflict resolution experience In depth understanding of and ability to prioritize college student development Demonstrate ability to partner and collaborate with campus faculty and staff About the Department Department Summary: The department of Care and Student Advocate Services supports students in distress through collaborative interventions, as well as de-escalating crises and threats. For those accused of misconduct, we balance due process rights with fostering developmental outcomes. Formally two separate units, (Care Program and Student Advocacy Services), these units were combined in 2024 for greater collaboration, cross-training opportunities for staff, visibility, flexibility in resource allocations, and potential for synergy.
