The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee ( UWM ) earned the highest rating – R1 – for a research institution from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, the gold standard for assessment. The rating was given to only 115 of the 4,665 universities evaluated in 2016. The Office of Research facilitates the creation of new knowledge and the development of innovative solutions by supporting research across the sciences, arts, and humanities that enhances the mission of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and spurs economic growth.
The Office of Research, and its staff, are responsible for central research administration, oversight of research policy and compliance, and internal research development programs. The Office is part of Academic Affairs, and includes the Office of Sponsored Programs, the Office of Undergraduate Research, as well as several research centers.
The Office of Undergraduate Research ( OUR ) is UWM’s central location for undergraduates seeking on-campus research opportunities and faculty seeking students with whom to collaborate. The OUR supports these collaborations by providing student salary, travel support, and professional development opportunities. The OUR serves over 500 students a year through a suite of programs that offers access to research opportunities throughout a student’s undergraduate career, and celebrates undergraduate research achievement annually at the UWM Undergraduate Research Symposium
Job Summary
The Academic Program Specialist ( APS )will assist in overseeing the day-to-day operation of the Office of Undergraduate Research, including recruiting and interviewing student participants, working with students in seminar settings, building student and faculty relationships, developing and facilitating professional development opportunities for both students and faculty, supervising student employees, and marketing the successes of the program to the campus community and prospective students. The individual will also represent the unit at campus, UW System, and national meetings and reports directly to the Director of the Office of Undergraduate Research.
Program Management
The individual develops, implements and supports the suite of research-focused professional development opportunities available through the Office of Undergraduate Research, including the UR@UWM Summer Research Program, the Support for Undergraduate Research Fellows Program ( SURF ), the Success Through Aging Research Program ( STAR ), and the MCW Cancer Center & UWM Undergraduate Research Experience Program. This includes developing and leading seminars and workshops, facilitating student travel, meeting grant requirements where necessary, coordinating guest speakers, and planning social and service events. The individual also assists in organizing the annual UWM Undergraduate Research Symposium that showcases undergraduate research outcomes of 250+ students. The individual represents the unit at campus discussions, UW-System meetings, and national forums regarding undergraduate research and student success. The individual collaborates with other campus units and departments, building strategic partnerships to advance undergraduate research on our campus. The individual also assists with program evaluation and assessment.
Communication & Marketing
The individual addresses inquiries from students and faculty regarding the OUR , and prepares marketing content, including social media, website development, and newsletter and flyer production.
Budget Support
The APS works with the director to set budget priorities, make budget recommendations and review expenses against the budget.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree
Minimum of 1 year of successful undergraduate instruction
Minimum of 2 years working in a higher education environment
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications:
Evidence of a background in student success initiatives. i.e. service learning, study abroad, undergraduate research, student housing, tutoring/mentoring
Evidence of successful administrative or instructional work in higher education
Experience working successfully in research-intensive universities.
Demonstrable success delivering formal and informal presentations to diverse audiences, e.g. students, staff, faculty, leadership
Target Salary Range $40,000-$60,000
