This position is per diem, with a variety of shifts available. This position is part of the Nursing Support department, which provides support to various units within Milton Hospital.
Job Description
POSITION FUNCTION:
Provides clerical and secretarial support to patients and staff in the assigned unit. The Unit Secretary receives direction from the Nursing Supervisor throughout their entire shift.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the general supervision of the Nursing Supervisor, performs a variety of selected secretarial and nursing activities to include but not limited to,
Answer phones in compliance with hospital policies and procedures.
Communicates effectively with all department staff, physicians, patients and their families where appropriate.
Updates patient information in hospital computer system.
Retrieves appropriate patient medical records and test results.
Delivers specimens to the Laboratory.
Schedules patient’s procedures/tests using the hospital computer system for order entry.
Documents repairs to be made on equipment and initiates requisitions.
Participates in the delivery of emergency care under the direction of a registered nurse or physician.
Considers specific cultural beliefs and practices when interacting with patients. Utilizes interpreter services for patients with limited English proficiency.
Collaborates, cooperates and communicates with other health care providers to ensure quality and continuity of care.
Provides care appropriate to the age groups of patients regularly served; seeks assistance for resources of other age groups that need care.
Performs all duties in accordance with safety and other laws, rules and regulations as set forth by appropriate regulatory and governmental agencies and in accordance with established departmental and hospital policy and procedure.
Adheres to standard precautions.
May participate as a member of nursing committees, in-services and orientation programs as directed.
Maintains a safe work environment within service area and actively participates in hospital safety programs and initiatives.
Shall assist in the ordering and upkeep of supplies as assigned by the Nursing Supervisor.
Obtains next day surgical and medical schedules.
Performs errands and assists with transport of patients leaving the area when necessary.
Arranges ambulance transport for patients when necessary.
Assists in the transcription of physician orders to various identified sources and by established policies and procedures.
Answers nurse call system and conveys information to the appropriate personnel.
File patient chart documentation.
Assembles patient record materials and is responsible for their disposal at discharge.
Assists in the discharge process by entering data into the computer system (inc. QI information).
Employee maintains competencies (position specific and hospital-wide) required for the specific patient population served.
May be required to perform similar or related duties as may be necessary on an emergency basis or as designated by the department manager or supervisor.
The nature of the tasks/responsibilities required of employees in this position will likely expose them to blood and body fluids. Employees will be oriented to and required to understand and follow the standard precautions for infection control. A summary list of tasks and procedures that may cause exposure to blood and body fluids is listed in the attached Physical Abilities Job Description. Also identified is the protective gear that is available.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Min Education: High school graduate, or equivalent
Min Experience: One year’s experience working in a comparable role preferably in a medical setting.
Skills: Medical Terminology and knowledge of Meditech Computer system preferred.
