Beth Israel Deaconess Milton is seeking a Nurse Manager for our 2 East Department. The Nurse Manager assumes responsibility for the 24-hour management, functions and quality of nursing. This position performs under the general supervision of the Director of Inpatient Nursing/Throughput within the framework of the RN license, maintains the standards of practice and evaluates the nursing care rendered on an ongoing basis.

This position is full time, day shift, 40 hours per week.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Organizes and directs functions and activities.

Interprets and implements established policies, procedures, regulations to personnel, patients, medical staff and the public.

Utilizes personnel efficiently and assures cost-effective utilization of supplies and equipment.

In collaboration with the Director of Inpatient Nursing/Throughput, the Nurse Manager will assist with developing/managing/planning of the annual budget.

In collaboration with the Director of Inpatient Nursing/Throughput, assumes responsibility for overall personnel management. This includes interviewing, selecting, disciplining, scheduling, assigning, supervising, evaluating performance and any other appropriate personnel actions.

Meets routinely with the Director of Inpatient Nursing/Throughput to discuss patient care, staff performance, staff concerns, equipment needs and other issues relative to the nursing unit.

Develops and/or maintains unit based Quality Improvement programs.

Monitors and assists in developing all appropriate competencies and skills.

Coordinates, participates and evaluates the orientation of new staff members with the assistance of assigned preceptors.

Participate as a member of nursing committees, in-services, and orientation programs as directed.

Attends and/or participates in in-house or outside training programs to improve and augment skills and knowledge.

Provides patient care as needed utilizing the Nursing Process:

systematically assesses the health status of the patient

analyzes and interprets data and makes nursing judgments regarding care

plans, implements and coordinates nursing interventions

evaluates outcome of nursing interventions

revises/updates plan of care

documents nursing process clearly and concisely

provides patient teaching as necessary

Considers specific culture beliefs and practices when caring for patients.

Collaborates, cooperates and communicates with other health care providers to ensure quality and continuity of care.

Provides care appropriate to the age groups of patients regularly served; seeks assistance for resources of other age groups that need care.

Assists in administering highly specialized therapy with complex technological equipment and demonstrates a high degree of autonomy in performing immediate, accurate patient assessments and appropriate nursing interventions.

Assesses, plans and implements nursing care of the patient recovering from moderate sedation and anesthesia, utilizing special skills, knowledge and judgment in observing, reporting and responding to symptoms and condition of patients and adheres to established philosophy, policies and procedures.

ADDITIONAL REQUIRED COMPONENTS:

Employee maintains competencies (position specific and hospital-wide) required for the specific patient population served.

Performs all duties in accordance with safety and other laws, rules, and regulations set forth by appropriate regulatory and government agencies and in accordance with established department and hospital policies and procedures.

May be required to perform similar or related duties as may be necessary on an emergency basis or as designated by the department manager or supervisor.

Employees will be oriented to and required to understand and follow the standard precautions for infection control.

Adherence to standard precautions.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Equivalent to a graduate of an accredited school of nursing, current licensure by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing. Master of Science in Nursing preferred.

Current certification in Basic Life Support

ACLS certification within 6 months

Telemetry certification within 6 months

Current IV skills.

At least five years medical surgical experience preferred.
