Job Description Summary

As a member of the BD Biosciences San Jose Product Engineering Team, you will be responsible for the design and support of sophisticated instruments for medical diagnostics and life science research, involving technology from every area of science and engineering. You will specialize on small, precision assemblies and redesign existing assemblies for improved performance and reliability to provide costs saving opportunities to the business.

We are looking for a highly motivated Senior Systems Engineer, who will provide high quality and innovative solutions to a wide range of challenging problems and contribute to the completion of specific design projects.

The ideal candidate is someone who applies a thorough understanding of system design and system integration tools and methodologies to connect pieces across different functional elements, e.g. Software, Mechanical, Electrical, Fluidics, and Optical engineering.

You will ensure the product requirements are defined/maintained and the lower-level functional design teams deliver to those requirements. You have experience evaluating current designs for cost savings opportunities in material selection, manufacturing process selection, or design.

You are a self-starter and want to implement solutions that are efficient and complete to further improve the current instrument portfolio. You have a desire and ability to understand the system and subsystems to acquire a deep knowledge of the flow cytometry instrument portfolio.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead Systems Engineering activities and the project team, including driving architecture and requirements for complex systems.

  • Scope, plan, and complete small to medium sized projects.

  • Identify cost savings opportunities.

  • Prototype and test designs to ensure they are robust and manufacturable.

  • Effectively communicate technical concepts/issues, project status, risks, and mitigations to the executive leadership team.

  • Exercise strong Communication and Leadership skills to collaborate with multi-functional BD teams, suppliers, and external partners.

  • Conduct root cause investigation of product and component failures.

  • Perform characterization testing, collect, and analyze data, prepare reports, and present results to multi-functional teams.

  • Provide technical support problems pertaining to specific programs and projects.

  • Consistently apply Systems Engineering Techniques such as requirements synthesis/management, traceability, risk management (ISO 14971), Verification and Validation.

  • Work effectively in a multi-functional team, in a collaborative manner to identify, communicate and mitigate project/program needs based on lifecycle phase.

  • Exercise judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.

  • Use well-adapted work methodologies utilizing scientific and statistical methods (six sigma) in resolving problems, devising tests, and setting specifications.

  • Provide support to Corrective and Preventative Actions (CAPA), End-of-life (EOL) component selection, and cost reduction activities.

  • Understand market trends and conditions to identify strategic technology opportunities.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering; ideally in Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering.

  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in systems engineering, product development, or product design.

  • Experience in developing and implementing System Level Characterization, Integration or Test Procedures

  • This position may require up to 10% travel, including international travel.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience with Flow Cytometry or biomedical devices is desirable.

  • Experience in Product Development for In Vitro Diagnostic and/or medical devices in ISO 13485 environment.

  • Experience taking a concept from feasibility prototype to production.

  • Experience with DFSS and or DOE methodologies.

  • Experience with Engineering Change Management procedures such as ECOs, engineering change impact assessments, and regression testing analysis.

  • Possess strong lab skills, with ability to perform and document detail-oriented work with a high degree of accuracy.

  • Experience with Risk Management methodology

  • Proficiency in the use of Traceability tools such as DOORS or Azure.

  • Good understanding of Structured Product Development Process.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Salary Range Information

$103,500.00 - $170,800.00 USD Annual
