JOB SUMMARY
Constructs, maintains, and installs electrical equipment, traffic signals, street lights, and school flashers throughout Salt Lake County.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Three (3) years of experience in a field closely related to these duties; OR an equivalent combination of related education and experience.
A valid Driver’s License issued by the State of Utah is required.
Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Learner’s Permit issued by the State of Utah within thirty (30) days of hire date.
Must possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) issued by the State of Utah within six (6) months of hire date.
Must complete the IMSA Roadway Lighting and Traffic Signal Level I certification within twelve (12) months of hire.
Must complete all internal equipment certifications within six (6) months of hire.
Must complete level I IMSA street light certification within twelve (12) months of hire.
Must receive a verified negative test result on a mandatory drug test before starting in this position. Will be subject to random alcohol and drug testing. May be subject to post accident and reasonable suspicion alcohol and drug testing.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Constructs, installs, and maintains traffic signal controllers, cabinets, pole base and foundations, mast arms, vehicle detection loops, underground/overhead wiring and conduit.
Constructs, installs, and maintains street lights, school flashers, and radar signs.
Monitors traffic coordination systems and ATMS systems
Coordinates with contractors and power company representatives to determine electrical problems or power failures. Facilitates resolution of repairs.
Operates specialized equipment such as boom trucks, line trucks, trenchers, and concrete saws.
Works with low and high voltage, electrical meters, and testing equipment.
Assists County Divisions with electrical equipment and electric motors as requested.
Investigates citizen concerns and resolves issues in a professional, courteous manner, while maintaining a safe environment and providing excellent customer service.
Follows applicable safety practices, requirements, and policies to prevent accidents and/or injuries.
Participates in a rotating on-call schedule to respond to emergencies.
Prepares and submits detailed daily reports of work completed, utility locates, and preventative maintenance logs.
Performs traffic control and other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSA)
Knowledge of:
National and State electrical codes
MUTCD standards and certifications
Operation and programming of electronic and computerized controllers, cabinets, and associated electronic power supplies, BIUs, detection amps, switch packs, etc.
TS2 signal controllers, switches, flashers, traffic signal wiring, 220-440 V three phase motors and pumps, street light systems, and commercial building wiring 120-220 V services
5000 V constant flower series circuits
Power line high voltage (7200 to 40,000 V)
Aerial bucket trucks and pole gear
PCBs, electrical coolants, signal embedding resins and catalysts, PVC, laminates, and electrical convents for contact and point cleaners
Salt Lake County street system and facilities
Skills and Abilities to:
Efficiently operate and maintain equipment
Work with high voltages
Problem-solve and repair controllers
Read and understand blueprints and schematics
Pour and finish concrete
Interact and communicate effectively with individuals in other trades and within crew both orally and in writing
Climb 40 to 90 foot power and/or light poles to make repairs
Safely work in heavy and normal traffic flow
Construct and install electrical systems for traffic control and street lighting
Perform manual labor
Prioritize tasks
Provide accurate cost estimates for assigned tasks and daily work sheets
Act and work independently and make decisions
Identify potential maintenance and safety issues
Design and set up traffic control
Locate utilities (Bluestaking)

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position requires extensive physical labor such as lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying objects over 50 pounds (occasionally up to 100 pounds with some assistance); kneeling, bending, sitting, and standing. The work involves exposure to extreme weather conditions, dirt, dust, heat, cold, chemicals, smoke, and/or loud noises.
This position requires working in close proximity to traffic, the general public, and outside environment, requiring observing strict safety standards.
Climbing up to 90 foot power and/or light poles. Working from bucket trucks.
