Description

POSITION PURPOSE

This position is responsible for underwriting and processing various consumer loan applications, including personal, auto, home improvement, credit card as well as Indirect Lending automotive loans in accordance with Credit Union Policy. Performs a variety of support duties related to the lending function within the credit union.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES

  • Perform responsibilities of position in accordance with federal and state regulations, credit union policies and procedures.

  • Maintain a thorough understanding of HFCU’s Loan Policy and underwrite loans in accordance with those parameters.

  • Proficient at pipeline management with an emphasis on organizational and multi-tasking skills.

  • Underwrite loan applications generated through various channels; in Branch, Online, and Indirect Lending following established CU policies and procedures.

  • Maintain a working knowledge of current loan fraud trends, leveraging internal tools and resources to evaluate incoming consumer loan applications for potential fraud.

  • Collaborate effectively with branch personnel, processors and other underwriters to ensure that loan applications are fully completed, the necessary supporting documentation is received, and the loan closes properly.

  • Gather background information on applicants by obtaining credit bureau reports, verify debts, and calculate aggregates and ratios to determine credit unions exposure in terms of secured and unsecured debt.

  • Analyze loan applicants’ financial status, credit, and collateral to determine feasibility of granting loans and provide feedback to branch personnel or financial counseling to members if applicable.

  • Approve consumer and indirect lending loans within authorized limits and communicate decisions to branch personnel and/or, and dealer if need be. Recommend approval or denial for those in excess of authorized limits; Explain reasons for declines and provide counter offers whenever possible.

  • Process adverse action notices for declined loans

  • Recommend operational procedures to increase effectiveness of department operations

  • Assist in conducting training on loan origination system for end-users and troubleshoot end-user system issues.

  • Serve as a resource on consumer products/services of the Credit Union; respond to internal and external loan related member questions & research; may provide guidance on consumer lending practices, loan policies and procedures.

  • Work together with all areas of lending including origination, consumer lending, indirect lending, servicing, and collections to ensure an efficient, effective team-based division.

  • Process/Analyze/Maintain Lending Department reports as assigned.

  • Participate in department and/or strategic projects as directed.

  • Meet or exceed the objectives set for accuracy, volume and profitability of all consumer and indirect loans as well as meet or exceed established service level and business unit strategic goals.

  • Performs other related and unrelated duties as requested and therefore required.

Performance is measured against the competencies and goals as outlined in the Employee Performance Program, and established in partnership with the employee’s leadership.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:2-year college degree preferred plus 5 years of related underwriting experience; or a comparable combination of education and experience.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE:Knowledge of accounting principles, fair lending practices & Lending industry guidelines, and good communication skills. This position requires that the employee gain a working knowledge of Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) requirements and how they will affect their work. The employee will comply with all requirements of the BSA and cooperate with the designated BSA Officer in assuring compliance.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:Experience using P.C. based software including Microsoft Office.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:Ability to project a professional appearance and positive attitude at all times.

MENTAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS OF THIS POSITION

REASONING ABILITY:Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

MATHEMATICS ABILITY:Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

LANGUAGE ABILITY:Ability to use passive vocabulary of 5,000-6,000 words; to read at a slow rate; define unfamiliar words in dictionaries for meaning, spelling, and pronunciation. Ability to write complex sentences, using proper punctuation, and use adjectives and adverbs. Ability to communicate in complex sentences; using normal word order with present and past tenses; using a good vocabulary. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, peers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Salary Description

$30.65 - $38.31 per hour
