Wesleyan University Temporary STEM Career Advisor in Middletown, Connecticut

Reporting to the Executive Director of the Gordon Career Center, the Temporary STEM Career Advisor is responsible for providing career advising to students seeking jobs, internships, and graduate school admission in STEM fields.

Responsibilities include:

  • Advise students who are considering STEM careers on how to explore their interests and skills and ensure that they are well educated in the career planning process. Help them prepare for interviews, refine their resumes and social media profiles, evaluate offers and negotiate compensation, and build professional connections in their areas of interest.

  • Advise students who are applying to graduate school in STEM fields.

  • Serve as primary point of contact for assigned academic departments and centers, administrative offices, and student groups as assigned for the purpose of providing information about the office and collaborating on programming.

  • Participate in the implementation of programs and events (employer information sessions, career treks to offsite locations, etc.) as needed throughout the year.

  • Other duties as assigned.

This position works up to 37.5hrs per week beginning in October 2024 – June 2025.

This position has the ability to be an on-campus or hybrid position. Remote work is only considered for residents of MA, VT, NH, ME, CT, RI, or NY.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and demonstrated expertise in the hiring practices of STEM fields. Two years of experience working in a STEM field; or as a career advisor to students entering STEM fields; or in a recruiting or other professional role demonstrating a knowledge of hiring practices; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must be flexible and willing to adapt to the needs of the office as needed. Proven ability to work as a member of a high-functioning, collaborative team. Excellent communications skills. Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and interact openly with individuals of different backgrounds, which include racial, ethnic, gender, socioeconomic and sexual identity diversity. Strong evidence of organizational and time management skills. Ability to learn new technology platforms quickly.

Preferred Qualifications:

Graduate degree in a STEM field. Demonstrated knowledge of career development within technology firms.Experience in a liberal arts college environment. Experience using Handshake.

Compensation: $26.00 - $31.00/hr.
