Medical-Legal Partnership (MLP) Attorney Fellowship (Bridgeport, CT)

Connecticut Legal Services, Inc. (CLS) seeks a skilled and committed attorney to lead its Medical Legal Partnership (MLP) with Hartford Health Care (HHC). The attorney will spend approximately three days per week at St. Vincents Medical Center (SVMC) in Bridgeport CT, and approximately two days per week in the CLS Bridgeport office. This is a two-year fellowship position with the possibility of an extension, dependent on funding.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited law school with a license to practice law in Connecticut;
  • Minimum five (5) years experience in the practice of law, with demonstrated experience in areas of public benefits and other health-impacting legal issues affecting people living at or below the federal poverty level;
  • Ability to handle and supervise the legal work of others engaged in direct services of the MLP, including, but not limited to law students;
  • Knowledge of basic principles of administration and supervision;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Commitment to serving the needs of people living at or below the federal poverty level;
  • Previous experience in a legal services program preferred;
  • Ability to build rapport and relationships with clients and colleagues, and
  • Experience managing and implementing grants and preparing reports preferred.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide legal consultation and direct representation to patients referred by SVMC staff (physicians, nurses, social workers, and other staff);

Facilitate referrals to other service providers when patients legal issues are outside the scope of MLP priorities;

Supervise the legal work of others engaged in the direct services of the MLP, including law students;

Help plan and coordinate trainings for SVMC staff on issue-spotting and referrals related to medical-legal issues;

Track cases through a case management system to ensure appropriate data entry for purposes of developing metrics related to patient referrals, screenings, legal services provided, and patient outcomes;

Participate in resource development, including management of grants, and, as necessary, work with HHC and CLS to identify and pursue grants and other funding opportunities;

Communicate and collaborate regularly with HHC/SVMC about case acceptance, case strategy, operational and other programmatic issues; and
