A U.S. Coast Guard licensed crew member for the vessel's deck department. Responsibilities include the crew's welfare and training in areas such as safety, firefighting, search, and rescue.

Carries out orders as directed by and reports to the Chief Mate.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES•Assists with all maintenance of the vessel's deck equipment and machinery•Assists line handlers during vessel movements• May operate cranes, winches, anchoring machinery, and other scientific instruments• Assists with small boat maintenance and operates small boats when necessary• Assists with lading and unlading of all cargo and scientific gear• Responsible for the interior and exterior cleanliness of the vessel• Stands navigational watches• Maintains vessel's chart inventory• Participates in safety drills as directed by the vessel's Emergency Station Bill• USCG licensed seaman in charge of vessel when the Captain or senior mate is not onboard or incapacitated to command the vessel• Member of ship’s firefighting team• Related duties as directed by the Captain

Skills:

• General vessel navigation• Ship Handling• Shipboard firefighting• Basic first aid• Computer skills - ability to use email, standard office software, compose & format correspondence• Ability to handle multiple priorities, organize and plan daily tasks and projects

Education:

  • High school graduate or equivalent

  • STCW endorsement preferred

  • Merchant Mariners Document - Ordinary Seaman or Able Bodied Seaman or greater

  • Rating Forming Part of a Navigational Watch preferred

  • Fire Fighting preferred

Experience:

Minimum 1 year of maritime experience on research or commercial vessels
