The SCCC S r. Research Associate 3, SOM conducts highly specialized and complex research in support of the division’s research goals and objectives and assumes responsibility for the successful operations of the laboratory. The incumbent also supervises the activities of all laboratory staff and users and serves as subject matter expert and mentor to less experienced staff.

Department Specific Functions

This individual will work in the Division of Transplant and Cell Therapy (TCT) Research Laboratory to support translational research. Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, coordinate the daily operations of the laboratory, provide training for staff, ensure laboratory is properly equipped and equipment is properly maintained, and all safety and compliance regulations are in place across the laboratory. Oversee and ensure effective biospecimen collection, processing, and storage activities including ensuring point-to-point proper coordination of biospecimen collection and processing from time of blood draw to cryopreservation, including providing backup specimen processing. Perform flow cytometry experiments including sample staining and data acquisition by flow cytometry for correlative studies of transplantation and cell therapy research. Administrative duties include responsibility for maintaining reagent, chemical and supply; selection and ordering of supplies; create and maintain protocols for staff to follow, safety and compliance training and certification for all lab staff and appropriate record keeping. Other duties as assigned by the Director.

Department Specific Qualifications:

Education: Master’s degree in relevant field required.

Experience: Minimum 5 years of relevant experience. Experience in flow cytometry, blood cell processing, and immune assays required. 5+ years' experience working in an immunology-based research environment preferred. Qualified individuals without advanced degrees are also encouraged to apply as relevant experience is most critical (position may be downgraded to allow those with appropriate experience to be hired).

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Flow Cytometry sample prep, data acquisition and data analysis

  • Peripheral blood mononuclear cell preparation/cryopreservation

  • Organized, detail oriented, excellent people and communication skills, and knowledge of UM medical school research environment.
