The department of Medicine has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Sr. Research Associate 2 to work on the UHealth campus. The Sr. Research Associate 2 supports research activities under the direction of a principle investigator, program director or designee of the principle investigator or program director. The Sr. Research Associate 2, SOM ensures that the operations of the assigned laboratory are efficient and in compliance with applicable guidelines and regulations. Moreover, this employee engages in complex and specialized research activities in furtherance of the University’s research goals and objectives. Incumbent scope of work will focus on understanding the mechanisms by which SMPDL3b regulates lipid metabolism and homeostasis in the kidney.

  • Contributes to basic and applied research activities by collecting and analyzing data and maintaining databases.

  • Understands and interprets research protocols and procedures.

  • Participates in the publication of significant results.

  • Advances expertise through continued education, training, and research.

  • Maintains an overview of relevant research findings.

  • Ensures all research is undertaken according to good research practice.

  • Stays abreast of developments in the field which may impact department functions.

  • Provides guidance, mentorship, and oversight to junior research staff and students.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

  • Will learn techniques established in the laboratory to analyze the lipid content of kidney cells (i.e. methods to investigate fatty acid uptake, primary culture of podocytes, mass spectrometry analysis of lipid content, etc.) and is expected to establish new techniques in the laboratory.

  • Will perform in vitro and in vivo experiments to define the mechanisms of action of SMPDL3b in kidney cells with the goal to identify new therapeutic strategies for the treatment of patients with kidney diseases.

  • Will perform phenotypical analysis of mouse models of kidney diseases.

  • Will be involved in the mentoring and teaching other undergraduate or graduate students and is expected to attend divisional and other meetings as deemed necessary.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s Degree in relevant field required.

  • 1 year of relevant experience required.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.
