Position description:

The Climate Accountability Lab headed by Prof. Geoffrey Supran (https://people.miami.edu/profile/19dbd62ef7e2e5fcd155ef0c53f35bc8) at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science has a funded opening for a full-time postdoctoral researcher. The researcher will work on a project computationally tracking climate change discourse on social media and other digital platforms .

Social media is the new frontier of climate disinformation and deception. Between 2018-20, ExxonMobil spent more on political advertising on Facebook and Instagram than any other corporation. To date, however, this topic has received little systematic attention. We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to analyze past and present climate narratives across major social media platforms, with a focus on countering climate disinformation and propaganda. The researcher will be part of a growing team of graduate and postgraduate colleagues and will collaborate with computer scientists at the Algorithmic Transparency Institute (a project of the National Conference on Citizenship) and other academic and non-profit organizations on data collection, analysis, academic reporting, website development, and other public outreach and engagement.

Candidates must have strong capabilities in relevant research methods, which could include social network analysis, statistical analysis and open-ended data mining; applied machine learning including Natural Language Processing and image recognition; interactive data visualization; and website development. Evidence of effective teamwork and communication skills is desirable. Experience investigating social media, disinformation, or climate change politics or communication is ideal but not essential.

Qualifications of position:

Expertise in any relevant topic will be considered. Minimum educational qualification is a PhD or equivalent in fields including but not limited to computational social science, applied data science, and computer science.

Required application materials:

Cover letter, a one-page statement of research experiences and interests, curriculum vitae, and contact information for three references.

For questions, please contact Prof. Geoffrey Supran ( gsupran@miami.edu ), but please note that only applicants who have submitted applications to the above link will be considered.

Start date/Appointment term:

As soon as possible. The position is for one year with the possibility for extension. Exceptional performance could lead to promotion to a permanent, non-tenured research staff role.

Salary:

$70,000 per year.

The University of Miami offers competitive salaries and a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, tuition remission and more.
