DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS

We have an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Scientist position at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center in the University of Miami, the only NCI designated cancer center in South Florida. Particularly, this position will contribute to the research activities within Dr. Stephen Nimer's lab. Dr. Nimer's laboratory has been studying the transcriptional regulation of hematopoiesis, with the aim of understanding how the normal process of stem cell self-renewal and differentiation are regulated and how these processes become aberrant in acute leukemia. In addition, they have been studying the AML1-ETO leukemia-promoting oncogene, defining its ability to promote stem cell self-renewal and deciphering how it regulates gene expression, as well as studying the role of epigenetic enzymes, including the protein arginine methyltransferases CARM1 and PRMT5 in normal and malignant hematopoiesis. The Assistant Scientist will contribute to basic and applied research activities and authors scientific publications, technical and agency reports, and patent preparations. Collaborates with senior staff to publish findings in refereed journals. Creates and conducts experiments and analyzes results. Works with other researchers to use and develop end products. Writes extramural proposals with approval from appropriate senior staff. Provides ready access to all experimental data for managing staff. Requests or acquires equipment and supplies for assigned project(s). Uses the Internet, surveys, legal documents, and other available sources to collect information. Applies for grants to continue research and prepares materials for submission to granting agencies and foundations. The SCCC Assistant Scientist carries out a particular research agenda in support of the University’s research goals and objectives. Moreover, the Assistant Scientist, SOM contributes to the scientific community by publishing research findings and promotes the University’s reputation as a leader in the field.

Education: Ph.D., M.D. or other doctoral level degree relevant field

Experience: Minimum 1 year of relevant experience
