The Department of Medicine has an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Scientist. The Assistant Scientist, SOM supports the University’s research goals and objectives by conducting research activities for the assigned division and garnering additional research grants/funding in alignment with University research goals, community needs, and scientific investigations within their field of interest. Moreover, the Assistant Scientist, SOM contributes to the scientific community by publishing research findings and promotes the University’s reputation as a leader in the field. The Assistant Scientist, SOM will perform a variety of technical duties involved in conducting physical, chemical, biological and other research laboratory tests and experiments to obtain data for research purposes. This individual will conduct laboratory methods utilizing the latest methodologies in molecular and cell biology in support of sponsored research; review scientific journals, abstracts and other literature for information applicable to research experiments; and independently analyze data and publish on findings. The candidate is also expected to assist and contribute actively to the development and testing of new methodologies and technologies—including the design and execution of experiments and the independent evaluation of new equipment, reagents, and other collateral materials to make recommendations based on expertise and experimental results.

Understands and interprets research protocols and procedures. The Assistant Scientist, SOM will work under the direction of the principal investigator. Conduct laboratory methods utilizing the latest methodologies in molecular and cell biology in support of sponsored research, review scientific journals, abstracts, and other literature for information applicable to research experiments. Aid in developing new methodology or expand existing ones. Independently analyze data and publish on findings. Set up instruments, materials and apparatus and operate laboratory equipment required for specific tests. Ensures all research is undertaken according to good research practice. Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs). Assist in writing and designing experimental procedures as required. Executes a variety of routine assays, tests, and studies involved in conducting physical, chemical, biological, and other research laboratory tests and experiments to obtain data for research purposes. Calculates research test results, collects data, and performs statistical analysis of laboratory results. Maintains an overview of relevant research findings. Assemble annual and monthly reports and presentations. Communicate with the PI regarding experimental data, laboratory, or other work-related issues. Publish results and/or contribute to the publication of significant results. Actively pursue research grants and/or additional avenues for funding. Keeps abreast of current publications relative to methods, techniques, and developments within the area of research. Collects, prepares, analyzes, dissects, and evaluates specimens or tissue cultures. Provides mentorship and training to laboratory staff, PhD students, and volunteers/observers. Operates laboratory equipment. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

Ph.D., M.D. or other doctoral level degree required

Minimum 1 year of relevant experience

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Work-related knowledge in tissue culture, molecular biology and genetics laboratory test techniques such as PCR, DNA/RNA extraction, cloning of cDNA sequences, amplification of DNA sequences by PCR, protein expression techniques, protein purification, plasmid analyses by restriction digest, protein gel electrophoresis, DNA gel electrophoresis, Northern blotting, Western blotting, Southern Blotting, siRNA/DNA transfections, are preferred.

  • Work related knowledge in Direct PCR, Phusion, and Tropism Assays, HIV virus production, and envelope cloning for HIV.

  • Collaborate with other employees, good organizational skills, and excellent computer skills required.

  • Excellent English language skills (both verbal and written) required.
