Job Description

The role of Associate General Counsel, Global Therapeutics – Specialty & Medical Affairs is responsible for developing legal strategy and driving strategic initiatives in support of AbbVie medicines in the Specialty franchise (e.g., Women’s Health, Endocrinology, Gastrointestinal Disorders, Hepatitis C) as well as legal support for AbbVie’s Medical Affairs organization . This position manages another attorney and will provide counsel concerning a broad range of legal, regulatory and compliance issues, with a primary focus on FDA promotional regulations, the False Claims Act, the Anti-Kickback Statute, and HHS-OIG guidance, consumer protection and competition law.

This position reports to the Vice President, Global Pharmaceuticals, Legal.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Serving as lead legal counsel to the Specialty franchise that includes a diverse portfolio of AbbVie medicines (e.g., Women’s Health, Endocrinology, Gastrointestinal Disorders, Hepatitis C), as well as support the Medical Affairs/HEOR organization to advance strategies across all AbbVie medicines.

  • Working cross functionally with Commercial, Medical Affairs, Regulatory Affairs, the Office of Ethics and Compliance, Public Affairs, and other departments to find solutions to meet business objectives consistent with the law, applicable policies/procedures, and AbbVie’s Code of Conduct.

  • Providing clear advice to clients and senior legal management on key priorities for the Specialty franchise and the Medical Affairs/HEOR organization, including medical and scientific engagement, addressing educational scientific gaps, evidence generation capabilities, and the support of enterprise growth goals.

  • Developing knowledge of the Specialty franchise & the Medical Affairs/HEOR organization and proactively guiding commercial, medical and regulatory clients.

  • Staying up to date on developments in healthcare laws and guidelines, identifying unmet needs and future legal issues, and proactively proposing strategies to optimize outcomes and results for patients, providers, and the company, while managing risk.

  • Being committed to meeting patient unmet needs across AbbVie’s therapeutic areas and energized to rise to new challenges and envision creative solutions.

  • Managing at least one direct report, which requires a commitment to coaching and professional development.

  • Serving as recognized source, for the business as well as other attorneys, regarding innovative ideas in complex areas of law, business, or technology.

Qualifications

  • Law degree from an ABA accredited law school and in good standing with the state bar of the jurisdiction in which your office will be located (or ability to gain licensure in the state in which your office will be located).

  • Minimum 10+ years of relevant experience in pharmaceutical/healthcare law.

Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range.
