Purpose of Position: This position is responsible for law enforcement duties consistent with the mission of the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The following examples are intended as illustrations only of the various types of duties assigned in positions allocated to this classification.   • Conducts routine police patrol in the unincorporated areas of Lauderdale County.
  • Observes traffic and enforces the traffic laws of the State of Mississippi.
  • Remains in radio contact with dispatch and other deputies while on duty.
  • Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service within Lauderdale County.
  • Takes reports of suspected criminal acts, motor vehicle crashes, and other activities that may be investigated by the department.
  • Makes arrests with or without warrants in accordance with state and federal laws and the Constitution of the United States.
  • Carries out orders of the courts of Lauderdale County, including but not limited to the service of process, executions, warrants, etc.
  • Remains available for citizen assistance while on duty.
  • Works various hours and days of the week.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Context: The Patrol Deputy is a full-time, permanent position in the Sheriff's Department. This position is supervised daily. The person in this position works shift work and is always on call. Approximately 10% of the work is performed indoors and 90% outdoors. The position has accountability for safety and legal issues related to the work. There is potential exposure to chemicals and/or hazardous materials daily. The stress level associated with this position is very high.


Minimum Qualifications: Deputies in this position must, at a minimum, meet the following qualifications:

  • Be 21 years of age or emancipated as an adult by a court of competent jurisdiction.
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Be in good physical condition.
  • Have no felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions involving moral turpitude.
  • Successfully complete the basic training for law enforcement officers as set by the Board of Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Training (BLEOST) for a full-time law enforcement officer, or be currently certified by the BLEOST as a full-time law enforcement officer.
  • Have a valid Mississippi Driver's License.
  • Pass a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Pass a pre-employment polygraph examination.
  • Pass a comprehensive background investigation.

Supervision:

  • Received: Receives supervision from the shift supervisor or other higher-ranking authority.
  • Given: Typically gives supervision to no other employee.
