Responsibilities

The Occupational Safety and Industrial Hygiene Department is looking for a high performing Scientist I with an attention to detail to provide industrial hygiene support to underground facilities and other projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Industrial Hygiene (IH) program for underground operations to include construction, maintenance, and experimentation activities primarily for the shift/swing shift.

  • Maintain, operate, and ensure calibration of a variety of sampling and monitoring equipment. Verify monitoring equipment is functioning properly.

  • Position involved indoor work in an office setting, outdoor work in construction areas, and underground work, activities in extreme temperatures, work in chemical protective clothing, and work with employees in all levels and professions.

  • Conduct IH hazard characterization/work as required by the project under the direction of Management/IH representatives to characterize work areas.

  • Perform and document activity hazard identification, exposure and risk assessments, and recommends control measures to mitigate hazards.

  • Perform facility health hazard evaluations of various facilities.

  • Attend re- and post-job meetings. Support activity level work package planning, development, and implementation.

  • Observe and document work activities.

  • Participate in IH Qualification Program.

  • IH support to Mission Support and Test Services, LC (TS) employees, supervisors, and managers in assigned areas. Assignments include but are not limited to IH monitoring in underground locations, assisting other industrial hygienists collecting samples, and maintaining respiratory protection.

  • Track and enter IH records in the Open Range database including exposure assessments, health hazard evaluations, battery room permits, designated hot work area permits, confined space evaluations, and equipment calibration data.

  • Assist in collecting, compiling, and analyzing measurement data. Participate in field operations, data collection, and report generation.

  • Identify work processes needing improvement and work IH Management on improving those identified areas.

  • Perform other duties assigned IH Management.

  • Coordinate submittal of samples (air, swipe, dosimetry) to the laboratory.

  • Work with staff and management to prepare technical reports and recommendations on how to correct hazardous conditions. Utilize peer reviews and consults with more senior level staff and/or management to ensure work procedures/processes are in compliance with TS and governmental requirements.

  • Will stop work if Occupational Safety and/or Industrial Hygiene requirements are compromised.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a calculus-based (STEM) field.Skill building experience must demonstrate either deeper technical specialization or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge. Graduate research experience may be recognized.

  • Must be qualified to wear/use various respiratory protection and personal protective equipment.

  • Must be able to work in an underground environment.

  • Must be able to work a back-shift/swing shift.

  • Skill building experience must demonstrate either a deeper technical specialization or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge. Graduate research experience may be recognized.

  • Must have:

  • Planning/organizing skills and initiative

  • Good written and verbal communication skills

  • Have self-motivating attitude and is open to exploring all areas of environmental, safety, health, and quality.

  • Ability to follow directions, both written and verbal, and able to work independently as well as part of a team.

  • Ability to work in underground environments and tunnels without being claustrophobic.

  • Have a strong attention to detail.

  • Ability to effectively deal with conflicting deadlines, frequent interruptions, and multiple tasks.

  • Strong computer skills are desired, including MS Office Suite and data management software.

  • The primary work location will be at the Nevada National Security Site (located 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada) and Forward Areas of the NNSS.

  • Work schedule will be 4/10s Monday through Thursday (subject to change). Overtime may be required.

  • Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

    MSTS is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants offered employment with MSTS are also subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment. In addition, Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship, at least 18 years of age.     Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Annual salary range for this position is: $64,688.00 - 97,032.00.

Starting salary is determined based on the position market value, the individual candidate education and experience and internal equity.
