The SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory seeks a Director of Project Portfolio Management Office (PPMO) with extensive experience in delivering capital projects in the DOE national laboratory system. Reporting to the Deputy Laboratory Director for Projects and Infrastructure, the PPMO Director will be responsible for overall management and strategic direction of the PPMO.

PPMO acts as a central hub for coordination and clear communication among different project teams, ensures proven methods and processes are implemented to achieve project goals efficiently, manages groups of project and constriction managers for SLAC capital projects requiring DOE Order 413.3b, General Plant Projects (GPP) and Institutional General Plant Projects (IGPP) adherence. Additionally, PPMO is responsible for project controls, maintaining Earned Value Management System (EVMS) certification, scheduling, cost estimating and risk management services for a significant laboratory project portfolio.

Additionally, the PPMO Director will be responsible for SLAC's Project Management Advisory Group (PMAG), chairing the group charged with providing assurance to the SLAC Laboratory Director about acceptable performance trends on laboratory mission critical projects.

Your specific responsibilities include:

  • Direct the activities of technical project management managers and the project management group. Perform the strategic management of the project management function, which impacts the entire lab/university.

  • Lead and manage a project management group, including recruiting, hiring, training, developing, evaluating, and setting priorities. Provide instruction on complex techniques and direction on projects. Evaluate the effectiveness of the organizational structure and programs to ensure success, development of employees, and appropriate use of staff resources.

  • Ensure work completion within schedule, budgetary and design constraints; make decisions about analysis, design, and testing; solve complex technical problems; and provide alternative methods for achieving goals when necessary.

  • Advise university/school-wide senior management on technical aspects of projects.

  • Manage the adoption and adaptation of emerging technologies to meet changing requirements, capabilities, and opportunities.

  • Build a competent and diverse project management team and workforce; recruit, lead, and mentor key staff through motivation and education; provide a clear vision and sense of mission for the organization; model change agent role to project management team.

  • Managing and optimizing PPMO performance

  • Building and expanding practical project competence and project management (PM) tools

  • Change management to establish PM tools and processes and their acceptance

  • Assurance for major and minor projects

  • Coaching project professionals (supporting and challenging)

  • Maintaining a project professional pipeline, including training and qualification

  • Directly managing a team of senior project managers and advisors

  • Partnering with SLAC major project directors and senior management team members supporting outstanding project performance

  • Partnering with DDPI to foster a culture of project management and execution excellence and accountability

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field, and ten years of progressively responsible, relevant project management experience performing duties similar to those listed above or combination of education and relevant experience.

  • Prior leadership or management experience in DOE Order 413.3b project(s) with significant technical scope and complexity. Such experience must include responsibility for scope definition, budget and schedule development, execution planning, staffing, risk assessment and management, earned value management, change control, contingency management, configuration management, documentation, safety, and stakeholder engagement, communication, and consensus building.

The expected pay range for this position is $232,000 - $280,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
