Job Duties: Bridge Maintenance

  • Has an ongoing and daily responsibility to organize human, equipment, material, and other resources; and to prioritize, schedule, assign, direct, guide and report on the work activities of other state employees so that the work is completed in an efficient and effective manner.

  • Performs and maintains the necessary repairs and installations in steel fabrication and erection for bridges and structures so that structural integrity is maintained at the lowest safety risk and inconvenience to the public.

  • Performs concrete work for the construction/repair of bridges and structures so that concrete will be correctly placed, consolidated, finished, and properly cured in accordance with the specifications.

  • Performs carpentry duties related to bridges, buildings, and structures to ensure proper construction, remodeling, and forming is completed in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with standards and relevant codes.

  • Cleans and prepares bridges, buildings, and structure surfaces for painting so that the aesthetic and structural value is maintained in a timely manner in accordance with standards.

  • Maintains work orders and completion reports.

  • Participates in safety inspections on bridges and structures to ensure structural integrity is maintained according to Federal and State requirements.

  • Develops traffic control plans and makes field adjustments in accordance with the Traffic Control Field Manual to ensure maximum safety of projects for employees and the traveling public.

  • Transfers and operates the full range of heavy equipment used by MnDOT so that work is accomplished as scheduled by the appropriate certified personnel.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Snow and Ice

  • Maintains roadways for snow and ice control removes snow from roadways and shoulders; opens and widens roadways of large accumulations of snow; removes snow from rights of way or yards; applies anti-icing and de-icing chemicals on stretches of highway under slippery conditions; and removes ice and material from culverts. May be required to act in a leadership role during snow and ice shifts.

Minimum Qualifications

The level of experience to perform this job at the Transportation Specialist level can be achieved with:

  • Four years of experience performing bridge maintenance activities (e.g., bridge construction, repair, and maintenance).

OR

  • Three years of experience performing bridge maintenance activities and one year of experience performing carpentry OR concrete OR iron work OR a combination of one or more of these activities.

  • Some examples of carpentry may include building construction; building repairs; or framing.

  • Some examples of concrete work may include grading; bridge construction repair and maintenance; or forming, placing and finishing concrete.

  • Some examples of iron work may include structural steel erection; setting anchor bolts and inserts; gusset plate installation; placement of reinforcing steel or rebar; or rebar replacement.

  • Note: A two-year technical trades training or degree (e.g., carpentry, concrete/masonry, etc.) may substitute for one year of experience listed above (for education to be considered in lieu of work experience, you must submit a copy of your transcript.)

  • Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.

  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with no air brake restriction and a tanker endorsement.

  • Successful completion of the NHI Course: Engineering Concepts for Bridge Inspectors.

  • Required to successfully complete the NHI Course: Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges within a reasonable timeline (approximately two (2) years).

  • Required to become a MN Certified Bridge Inspection Team Leader within a reasonable timeline (approximately five (5) years).

  • Required to obtain a Snooper Basket Operator Certification within one (1) year of the appointment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous MnDOT Bridge experience working as a Transportation Generalist Senior.

  • Welding experience.

  • Successful completion of the NHI Course: Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges.

  • Bridge Safety Inspection Team Leader Certification.

  • Database experience.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to work nights; is required to work outside in all season weather exposed to the weather elements (both hot and cold). The employee must frequently climb slopes and/or rig, and work from scaffolds at considerable heights. Working conditions include wet/humid climate; handling toxic/caustic chemicals; vision, noise, vibration and respiratory hazards. The employee must constantly or frequently move up to and over 100 pounds. Duties include the operation of heavy equipment, vehicles and machinery, and the use of construction, power and hand tools, requiring continual lifting and/or carrying of light to very heavy weight. Performance of job duties requires the frequent or constant rotation through, various body positions including standing, twisting, bending, sitting, kneeling squatting, crawling, reaching, firm gripping and grasping. Working conditions might also include working from a motorized boat in high water situations. The employee must be able to wear and use personal protective equipment to protect the head, eyes, hearing, respiration, visibility and feet from injury. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to communicate through writing, speaking and hearing, and also able to communicate with the use of electronic communication equipment, i.e., telephone, 2-way radio, computer, etc. An individual with a disability may be qualified to perform the function if an accommodation would enable this person to perform the job in a different way, and the accommodation does not impose an undue hardship.

Additional Requirements

Note: The incumbent will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Individuals not currently in the random testing pool must pass a pre-placement drug test for evidence of use of marijuana, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP), amphetamines and semi-synthetic opioids (i.e., hydrocodone, oxycodone, hydromorphone, oxymorphone).

The incumbent is required to be immediately accessible to a phone and be able to report to work within one (1) hour of being called.
