As a Principal R&D Development Engineer, you will design and develop life-saving medical device products. Key responsibilities include leading new product development, conducting product testing and creating models and prototypes. You will actively seek out Voice of the Customer (VOC) input and translate that into product requirements, design specifications, and mechanical concepts. You will work under general direction and may serve as key functional core team member and/or leadership role in an extended team. The product focus will be on spinal implants and instrumentation to treat degenerative, deformity, and tumor/trauma conditions.
Day in the life:
Plans, directs and implements all aspects of design and development of new medical device products.
Leads the investigation and evaluation of existing technologies.
Defines spinal systems and designs that meet the expectations and uses of the customer, regulatory agencies, and the business.
Conceptualizes new designs based on identified customer needs and requirements
Provides technical leadership in the definition, evaluation, and risk analysis of system designs. This includes understanding system interfaces, use cases and conditions, investigating and resolving system and design issues, making improvements to address customer feedback and requests, and leading testing activities.
Defines and performs verification and validation activities ensuring products meet user needs and intended use.
Contributes and builds domain knowledge around spinal systems, their clinical use and application via customer and field visits, literature searches and training.
Ensures personal understanding of all quality policy/system items that are applicable. Follow all work/quality procedures to ensure quality system compliance and high-quality work.
Guides the conceptualization of new methodologies, processes, and products.
Directs the development of new mechanical concepts from initial design to market release.
Monitors documentation maintenance throughout all phases of research and development.
Organizes the coordination of activities with outside suppliers and consultants to ensure timely delivery.
Design and redesign medium to high complexity Spinal medical devices and subsystems.
Test and optimize the design by designing and conducting relevant experiments and evaluations including numerical verification.
Participate in pre-clinical in vivo labs, observing cases in hospitals and through planned and unplanned customer interactions.
Create and evaluate prototypes to generate concept and model approvals.
Write engineering reports and create presentations as required to document and communicate results.
Institute design changes based on internal and external customer feedback.
Collaborate with peers to manage the development of appropriate testing to verify product meets internal and external customer requirements.
Maintain accountability to the completion of specific programs and projects in accordance to agreed project deliverables.
Contribute inventions, new designs and techniques regarded as advances in the medical and technical/scientific community.
Use advanced techniques to anticipate, identify and develop solutions or alternatives to a variety of common and uncommon problems having a range of complexity.
Provide leadership, training and mentorship to less experienced team members.
Demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks/projects with a strong problem solving ability.
Adhere to safety policy procedures.
Must Have: Minimum Requirements
Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering, or Technically related degree with minimum 7 years of relevant experience required
Or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience
Nice to Have
10+ years of engineering experience
Thorough understanding of spinal medical device industry and competitor products. Working knowledge of other related disciplines.
Demonstrated ability to take initiative in keeping current with technology developments in specialized area.
In depth knowledge and wide application of technical principles, theories, and concepts in related field of expertise to develop innovative approaches to work
In-depth clinical knowledge for uses of product.
In-depth knowledge of Spinal anatomy relative to surgical procedures for specific products.
Ability to effectively communicate and work cooperatively with others as a lead member of a team.
Demonstrated experience sharing information, status, needs, and issues with others in order to inform, gain input, and support decision-making.
Expertise in medical device development and related processes.
Equipment and tooling design for new products.
Experience with designing Spinal medical device products
Experience designing orthopedic and/or dental medical device products
Experience with material processing and testing: Titanium, Cobalt Chrome, Stainless Steel
Experience working in a FDA regulated and/or medical device environment with ISO and Quality System Regulation requirements
Deep manufacturing knowledge of machining and 3D printing.
Medical device experience – preferably trauma, orthopedics, or dental
Proficiency with CREO, SolidWorks, or similar 3D CAD program
Proficiency with drawing standards including GD&T and tolerance stack
Experience in product concept development, functional analysis, use case and condition identification, interface definition and control, verification and validation on a cross functional team on complex programs
Able to conceptualize ideas based on set of identified needs and requirements
Strong collaborator in a cross-functional team environment
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment
