St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Postdoctoral Research Associate - Chemical Biology & Therapeutic in Memphis, Tennessee
We are recruiting a Postdoctoral Fellow (Medicinal Chemist) to join the efforts in chemically modulating transcription factors. The Chen Lab (https://www.stjude.org/research/labs/chen-lab-taosheng.html) uses multidisciplinary approaches to study transcriptional regulation by nuclear receptors, including chemical biology approaches to develop chemical modulators, with a goal to understand nuclear receptor-regulated transcription networks and design therapeutic approaches to overcome drug resistance and tumorigenesis in cellular and animal models. The medicinal chemistry efforts are expected to synergize with our pharmacology and structural biology efforts and enable publication of impactful papers (e.g., Nat Commun 8:741, 2017; J Am Chem Soc 143:18467, 2021). We work closely with the High Throughput Bioscience (HTB) Center (directed by Dr. Chen) (https://www.stjude.org/research/departments/chemical-biology-therapeutics/high-throughput-biosciences.html) on target validation, assay development, and compound screening.
The Chen Lab provides a unique training environment: in addition to basic research, the postdoctoral fellow will learn and gain experience in small molecule drug discovery from target validation, chemical probe discovery and optimization to preclinical mechanistic studies. Former Chen Lab postdocs have landed jobs as Assistant Professors in Universities, Senior Scientists in Pharmaceutical Companies, or Staff Scientists at St. Jude.

The postdoctoral fellow will independently design and synthesize compounds to modulate the function of nuclear receptors and drug-metabolizing enzymes, and collaboratively characterize their mechanisms of action (e.g., biochemical and cell-based assays, crystal structural studies and modeling of compound–protein interactions).
Highly motivated individuals with a strong publication record are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will have a strong background in medicinal chemistry. Experience in the following areas is a plus: in silico modeling of protein-ligand interaction; structure-guided compound design and optimization; design of bi-functional compounds (e.g., PROTACs). Candidates must have (or soon receive) a PhD degree.
As of September 10, 2021, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has mandated the COVID-19 vaccine for all employees, excluding those with an approved medical or religious accommodation, as a condition of employment.
