U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic in Memphis, Tennessee

Summary About the Position: This position is with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Memphis Operations Division, Revetment Branch, Bank Grading Unit, Memphis, TN. Responsibilities Progressively learns proper ways to troubleshoot and locate defects and determines the nature and extent of repairs to heavy mobile equipment, vehicles and floating plant. Assist journeyman with overhauling, rebuilding, and major repair of systems including: (1) internal combustion engines; (2) automatic and non-automatic transmissions; (3) heavy duty drive line systems; and (4) hydraulic utility system and controls. Learn and use specialized testing equipment, hand tools and power equipment such as motor testers, analyzers, pressure gauges, air and hydraulic Jacks, welding equipment, micrometers and grinding machines. Assist journeyman with the full range of overhaul and repair work on a variety of marine plants, and tenders having engines with up to 12 cylinders. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Schedule: During the Revetment season, typically June through December, all Revetment employees, including this position, travel in various locations along the Mississippi River. The employees work 12 workdays on & have 2 days off. Employees will be on TDY & will lodge in hotels within the vicinity of the work area. During the work season this position works typically a 10-hour shift. During the non-Revetment season, the crew works at Ensley Engineer Yard, Memphis, TN, on either a 5-day/8-hour or 4-day/10-hr. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision. Perform repair, maintenance, general servicing of equipment. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Trouble Shooting Physical Effort: The work requires frequent bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. Work is sometimes performed on the top of and under vehicles in cramped or awkward positions. Does strenuous work while standing, lying or sitting. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds, and often puts forth similar effort in pushing, pulling, turning, and positioning parts, assemblies, equipment, and tools. Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside, subject to all types of weather conditions. There is frequent exposure to irritation and discomfort from dust, heat, fumes, and from hard, damp floors or ground. Typically works on parts and systems which are dirty, oily, or greasy. There is also frequent exposure to the possibility of receiving cuts, burns, bruises, and sprains while repairing, positioning, and moving equipment; and danger to skin and eyes from acid, fluids, and lubricants. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment and protective clothing as required. Education Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year probationary period may be required. Appointment is subject to the completion of a favorable suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a background investigation. Direct deposit of pay is required.
