Amazon Senior Construction Cost Engineer in Melbourne, Australia

The Data Center Construction Cost Control (CCC) team is part of a larger, highly creative and driven team dedicated to deploying our continuously evolving Amazon data center facilities. As a Snr. Construction Cost Engineer, you will be responsible for providing cost support, guidance and recommendations to the project delivery team to ensure cost management and analysis across a portfolio of fast paced construction projects. You will be involved in the full life cycle of construction projects while working with motivated experts from design, construction, procurement, finance and legal teams to deliver efficient and innovative data centers. You will help drive multimillion dollar projects utilizing Amazon Leadership principles including frugality and insist on the highest standards.

This role is located in Melbourne, Australia, and requires extensive on-site presence overseeing multiple campuses in the Australia (Melbourne) Region.

This position requires that the candidate selected hold or be able to attain an Australian Government Security Vetting Agency clearance (See https://www.agsva.gov.au/applicants/eligibility-and-suitability )

Key job responsibilities

The Snr. Construction Cost Engineer will be responsible for:

• Engaging and managing third party Quantity Surveyors contracted to provide commercial support.

• Validating construction cost estimates at various stages of design.

• Draft commercial detail and supporting documents for all Capital Appropriation Requests.

• Working seamlessly with multi-disciplinary teams, both internal and external.

• Communicating cost control goals to all stakeholders effectively.

• Identify Value Engineering opportunities in the design and quantify the savings.

• Identify project risks and the financial cost impacts associated with them and communicate to the broader team.

• Defining and tracking cost performance metrics and leading monthly cost reporting.

• Analysing and providing timely feedback of vendor proposals using AWS benchmark data.

• Deep understanding of the commercial management of the General Contractor (GC) from liaison with our procurement team on the Request for Proposal (RFP) documents through to the final payments and agreement of the final accounts and paperwork.

• Validating the final award amount and scope based on contract documents.

• Implementing, maintaining and executing all cost control, change management, progress and performance reporting.

• Validating construction change cost impacts.

• Ensuring vendor invoices are accurate and timely.

• Delivering results for multiple projects with competing priorities on a consistent basis.

• Regular travel to data center sites for on-site cost audits, change order inspections, weekly commercial meetings, monthly on-site pay application reviews, as required.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, Project Controls, or related field

• 10+ years of cumulative experience in construction cost control/cost management, with specific knowledge of electrical, mechanical or CSA cost elements.

• Experience managing the estimating or commercials on a major Data Center or other mission critical construction portfolio.

• Be able to read and interpret construction related drawings for all disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience reviewing and justifying budgets and estimates.

• Experience communicating estimate strategy to construction and non-construction professionals.

• Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.

• Ability to create and maintain documentation.

• Experience with estimating software such as CostX

• Ability and willingness to think outside of the box to find creative and innovative solutions prior to and during the construction process to reduce costs with no impact on quality and reliability.
