Do you have experience managing large, complex programs? Amazon Web Services (AWS) is seeking a seasoned, proven leader to join the Data Centre Operations organisation.

The AWS Data Center Community owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of al global data center infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centre’s and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely upon. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain — and we’re looking for talented people who want to help.

This organisation manages rapidly-scaling, high-availability data centres safely and in a secure manner. They execute server and network device installations, IT hardware repairs, IT hardware decommissioning and upgrades, and data centre mechanical and electrical system operations and maintenance on a 24x7 basis.

The Sr. Manager of Operations in a Cluster Leader role must be technically adept, operationally agile, and completely committed to delighting our internal and external customers. The Cluster Leader will be responsible for ensuring standards for operational performance in the areas of safety, security, availability, capacity, employee engagement and development, and cost of all data centres in a specific region.

The right candidate will need to stay on top of the long-term strategy as well as the operating details of their organisation to ensure urgent tactical issues are closed and the teams are taking steps to head off customer impacting risks and issues. We seek a proven leader with operational strength and experience building and leading geographically dispersed teams while also having driving improvements across the global AWS organisations.

Key job responsibilities

  • Oversight of teams accountable for safe and secure installation, operation, and maintenance of data centre mechanical, electrical, and controls systems to include preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, emergency maintenance, and change management.

  • Oversight of teams responsible for installation, repair, and decommissioning of data centre IT hardware and network devices.

  • Leading, managing, coaching, and developing the data centre cluster operations management teams.

  • Performance management of key vendors such as maintenance vendors in line with management goals.

  • Executing the infrastructure operations support component of new data centre launches and existing data centre expansions.

  • Proposing and complying with agreed operational performance goals relating to safety, security, availability, capacity, people, and cost.

  • Supporting the physical security safeguarding of the people, assets, and customer data in data centres.

  • Managing the operations budgeting and capital expenditures in line with management targets.

  • Contributing to continuous improvement of operational processes, procedures, methods, and tools including those related to safety, security, and availability incident/event response, management, recovery, and resolution.

The expectation is the person in this role will spend time in the data centre facilities each week with the team members to learn, coach, guide, and mentor staff. This role is a leader of leaders and technical subject matter experts.

We are experiencing rapid growth, therefore your onboarding will be dynamic in nature, where you will gain diverse experience working in new and established AWS data centre's. These future Amazonians will rotate through various AWS locations to complete training as part of their onboarding to prepare for deployment in a data centre region. This training will be completed over a duration of 6-12 months. Once training is completed, individuals will be relocated to the permanent location.

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience leading technical teams and people managers in critical operations environments

  • Demonstrated ability to manage performance, hire and develop leaders, and favorably impact team culture

  • 3+ years of experience launching new sites or expanding existing operations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of information technology infrastructure domains such as compute server platforms, storage server platforms, server components, network devices, and IT service delivery preferred.

  • Experience in new data centre deployments or expansion of existing data centres

  • Experience in continuous improvement methodologies such as Lean and Six Sigma.

  • Experience with information technology infrastructure including data centre facilities

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills to include long form business documents.

  • 10+ years of global or regional operational experience
