Department Summary:

The Social and Behavioral Sciences (L175) in the Data and Human Centered Solutions Innovation Center is seeking a qualified Department Chief Engineer to empower and enable the department to develop social and behavioral sciences capabilities for a safer world. L175 analyzes and improves human cognition, decision-making, behavior, and well-being across a range of contexts and missions to maximize the impact of human and systems interactions. L175 supports a wide range of sponsors and internal customers and is active in MITRE’s research program. As part of the department leadership team, the Department Chief Engineer will drive innovation by informing L175 strategy and focusing our capability development. The Department Chief Engineer will be responsible for ensuring technical excellence of our work, generating, and shaping new work, and growing and mentoring staff.

Job Description:

  • Advocate for the department and create demand for our capabilities and services.

  • Promote innovative solutions and leading practices by bringing together MITRE, external industries, and academia.

  • Partner with MITRE chief engineers and chief scientists across MITRE divisions and departments to support strategic planning and work program shaping.

  • Provide technical thought leadership, stay abreast of new trends and technologies, advise department staff on technical challenges and project risks, and oversee technical quality reviews.

  • Contribute to or lead technical projects and ensure project impact, transition, and technology transfer.

  • Mentor department staff and foster a culture of innovation and inclusion.

  • Foster and coordinate the department’s involvement in internal and external symposia, publications, and seminars.

  • Increase the department’s growth and ability to execute by participating in the hiring process to identify and evaluate exceptional candidates.

  • Proactively recruit, develop, and support a team with the technical expertise and skills needed for our diverse work program.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 10 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 8 years with a Master’s degree; or 5 years with a Ph.D., ; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.

  • Expertise in at least 3 social and behavioral science fields.

  • At least 2 years of experience conducting social and behavioral science work in a Federally Funded Research and Development Center.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop new social and behavioral science capabilities.

  • Demonstrated ability to create and shape new work with a variety of US government organizations.

  • Existing connections with academia and industry in social and behavioral sciences as well as other related fields such as but not limited to Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning, Human-Centered Engineering, Qualitative/Quantitative Analysis, and Program Evaluation.

  • Recent evidence of scholarship such as publications in peer reviewed journals or other technical outlets within the last 4 years.

  • Experience in managing large groups of researchers in a scientific and administrative capacity.

  • Experience in leading and managing diverse teams.

  • Experience mentoring and coaching staff.

  • Strong team player with problem-solving, systems thinking, planning, organizational and interpersonal skills.

  • Strong written and verbal communications skills; demonstrated ability to communicate and build relationships with executive level civilian and military leaders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A minimum of one US government clearance and be able to get clearances with other agencies such as DoD, DHS, IRS, VA, etc.
