RE Tech Advisors is seeking talented, curious young professionals who are passionate about decarbonizing the built environment to join our Climate Risk Solutions (CRS) practice area!

The CRS team at RE Tech works across multiple sectors – including commercial real estate, private equity, and investment lending – and partners with clients to design and implement programs focused on building decarbonization and climate risk. Our service offerings include design and implementation of programs that include decarbonization, carbon accounting, and transition and physical risk management. Summary Description

Support client projects including greenhouse gas inventories, carbon target setting, climate risk assessments, and development and implementation of decarbonization strategies.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Conduct greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories for clients, which includes:

  • Identify market peers, conduct research, and define operational and organizational boundary for an inventory.

  • Collect client data, estimating where needed utilizing the GHG Corporate Protocol.

  • Perform data quality checks utilizing RE Tech data reports and internal processes.

  • Calculate, compile, and aggregate emissions data following standard processes.

  • Support the manager in providing responses to the third-party assurance provider.

  • Assist the manager in the development of decarbonization strategies for clients which includes:

  • Join client calls to capture key information to establish a target and develop strategies.

  • Conduct analysis to support establishing energy and emissions reduction targets for clients.

  • Assist in preparing documents and policies utilizing established templates and processes around renewable energy strategies, green power procurement and REC and carbon offsets.

  • Independently identify client properties that are significant energy consumers and contributors to the portfolio emissions and the reasons why.

  • Review building data (e.g., Property Condition Assessments, energy audit results) and contribute to the development of Decarbonization Action Plans to assist buildings in reducing energy and emissions and meeting building performance standards.

  • Utilize climate analytics tools and reports to identify physical risks (hurricanes, floods, etc.) to buildings based on future climate scenarios and evaluate potential mitigation strategies.

  • Identify transition risks at the client portfolio and their assets, including compliance with state/local building performance and/or emissions benchmarks.

  • Assist in client due diligence process for potential acquisitions by utilizing established reports and processes to evaluate climate, energy, emissions and regulatory risks and opportunities.

  • Support the development of and contribute to written resources to bring clarity to complicated decarbonization concepts.

  • Properly and accurately track all of your time worked and expenses in BigTime, billing to the correct codes and using the correct labor categories.

  • Know and follow company policies and processes.

  • Perform all other duties as needed and assigned.

Essential Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard.

  • Understanding of concepts surrounding carbon neutrality, net zero, and other pathways to decarbonization.

  • Familiarity with renewable energy certificates (RECs), carbon offsets, and green power procurement options.

  • Understanding of various climate frameworks related to emissions and climate risk, including physical risk and transition risk.

  • Understanding of building systems and the ability to think critically and creatively about energy conservation measures.

  • Demonstrate a growth mindset by living and breathing our culture of continuous learning, growing, and improving.

  • Possess analytical and problem-solving capabilities. Demonstrate strong attention to detail in your work.

  • Demonstrate sound business ethics, including the protection of proprietary and confidential information.

  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to a changing landscape and client needs, handle multiple time-sensitive priorities, excel in a fast-paced environment, and ability to pivot and adjust priorities and approaches.

  • Ability to exercise judgement and self-prioritize assignments daily. Ability to proactively identify and communicate issues to the appropriate Manager, including how to address competing priorities.

  • Strong interpersonal skills including courtesy, professionalism, and a cooperative attitude. Ability to effectively handle challenging interpersonal situations, including co-worker and client relationships.

  • Strong written communication skills with a propensity to write in a clear, concise manner to convey points effectively, creatively, and with the appropriate tone and professionalism.

  • Strong verbal communication skills to effectively interact with and build confidence among internal and external contacts.

  • High degree of initiative, proactiveness, drive, enthusiasm, energy, and follow through.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) to effectively review and generate reports, graphs, and presentations. With a strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel.

  • Ability to function well when working in interdisciplinary teams that include technical and non-technical staff.

  • Quantitative aptitude and the ability to conduct basic energy and financial analysis in Excel—including simple payback, IRR, NPV, and ROI is a plus.

  • Understanding of energy auditing and retro-commissioning is a plus.

Education and Experience:

  • 2-4 years of work experience in a professional service and/or consulting environment

  • Experience with corporate sustainability, climate risk, energy and/or decarbonization programs.

  • Experience with energy, water, and waste benchmarking, supporting real estate portfolios.

Travel Requirements

Periodic travel is required for the role. Travel may include travel to RE Tech offices, if remote, or between RE Tech offices (Fairfax, VA and Dallas, Texas) for meetings (estimate of four times per year), as well as for Legence and/or client business needs.
