Scope of Job

To provide professional skills in the distribution of drugs and clinical services offered to oncology patients ensuring the safe and effective provision of pharmaceutical care.

Description of Duties

  • Accurately and safely prepares, compounds, and dispenses complex oncology medications per physician’s orders in all patient care areas in accordance with departmental and applicable laws.

  • Reviews and verifies medication orders for appropriateness and clinical accuracy.

  • Provides drug information and consults with healthcare providers on treatment plans.

  • Utilizes aseptic technique to prepare sterile IV admixtures, including chemotherapy drugs, TPN , and other sterile products.

  • Ensures compliance with USP <797> and other sterile compounding regulations.

  • Monitors and maintains sterile compounding facilities and equipment.

  • Collaborates with the healthcare team to optimize medication therapy for oncology patients.

  • Counsels patients receiving medications.

  • Participates in multidisciplinary rounds and cancer care meetings.

  • Assists in the development and implementation of clinical protocols and guidelines.

  • Supervises and mentors pharmacy technicians, ensuring compliance with policies and regulations.

  • Oversees the training and competency assessment of pharmacy technicians.

  • Schedules and delegates tasks to optimize workflow.

  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives related to oncology pharmacy services.

  • Assists in medication error reporting and investigations.

  • Maintains accurate and complete patient medication records.

  • Ensures compliance with state and federal pharmacy laws and regulations.

  • Promotes a culture of safety, including the handling of hazardous medications.

  • Maintains a clean and organized work environment.

  • May participate in pharmaceutical continuing education, in accordance with departmental performance standards.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervision Received

General supervision from assigned supervisor.

Supervision Given

Direct supervision of assigned staff.

Required Education

Bachelor of Science (BSPharm) or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) from an accredited school of Pharmacy to include 20 hours IV prep training accredited by ACPE .

Preferred Education

None.

Licenses/Certifications

Current licensure from the Texas State Board of Pharmacy.

Required Experience

Five (5) years of experience as a Pharmacist in an oncology or hospital setting.

Preferred Experience

Leadership and supervisory experience in an oncology setting.

Equipment

Use of standard pharmacy office equipment. Knowledge in the operation of pharmacy equipment. Proficiency in pharmacy software and computer systems.

Working Conditions

Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office/patient care environment; some travel and weekend work is required. Exposure to hazardous medications, requiring strict adherence to safety protocols. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
