Scope of Job
To lead and ensure the efficient operation of pharmaceutical services while maintaining the highest standards of patient care and safety. This position involves supervisory responsibilities and collaborative work with the pharmacy team to support patients undergoing cancer treatment.
Description of Duties
Oversees and leads the daily pharmacy operations, ensuring compliance with policies, procedures, and regulations.
Provides leadership and guidance to pharmacy technicians and support staff.
Trains and mentors new pharmacy technicians.
Accurately and safely prepares, packages, and dispenses medications.
Performs prescription verification and review for completeness and accuracy.
Ensures timely delivery of medications to patients and healthcare providers.
Monitors and maintains inventory levels of pharmaceuticals and supplies.
Assists with ordering, receiving, and restocking medications and supplies.
Manages drug recalls and expired medication disposal processes.
Ensures and provides excellent customer service to patients, nursing staff, and oncologists answering questions and addressing concerns.
Processes third party billing claims and assists with securing patient assistance.
Collaborates with healthcare providers to ensure optimal medication therapy outcomes.
Maintains patient confidentiality and adheres to all HIPAA regulations.
Participates in quality improvement initiatives and regulatory compliance.
Performs routine inspections and documentation to meet accreditation standards.
Assists in medication error reporting and investigations.
Ensures compliance with state and federal pharmacy laws and regulations.
Maintains a clean and organized work environment.
Promotes a culture of safety and adherence to all safety protocols.
Stays current with developments in oncology pharmacy practice.
Assists in the compounding of specialized oncology medications.
Supports research initiatives within the cancer center pharmacy.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Direct supervision of assigned staff.
Required Education
High School diploma or equivalent to include 40 hours IV prep training accredited by ACPE .
Preferred Education
Completion of an accredited pharmacy technician program.
Licenses/Certifications
Current Pharmacy Technician Registration with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy ( TSBP ).
Preferred:National Certification (CPhT)
Required Experience
Four (4) years of experience as a pharmacy technician in an oncology or hospital setting.
Preferred Experience
Experience obtained in an oncology setting to include supervisory experience.
Experience as a pharmacy technician in a retail setting.
Equipment
Use of standard pharmacy/office equipment. Knowledge in the operation of pharmacy equipment such as: Dolly, Pyxis Machine, Biological Safety Cabinet, and Horizontal Laminar Flow Hood.
Working Conditions
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office/healthcare environment; some travel and weekend work is required. Exposure to hazardous medications, requiring strict adherence to safety protocols. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
Other
Strong knowledge of oncology medications.
Strong knowledge of oncology sterile preparation.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Proficiency in pharmacy software and computer systems.
Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
Ability to work in a fast-paced and high-stress environment.
Ability to stand for extended periods.
Lifting and carrying boxes of medications and supplies, up to 20 pounds.
Manual dexterity for precise medication handling.
