Job Description:

The Chief Engineer, Space Avionics will manage highly experienced engineering professionals. This position will have technical authority on design, architecture, integration and tests in relation to the programs. The chief engineer will communicate with customers, program managers and engineers on matters of strategic importance including but not limited to new concepts, practices and approaches. This position will also be responsible for establishing the direction for processes, systems, solutions and products using significant conceptualization, reason and interpretation. Solutions provided are innovative and often define best practices for the future.

Essential Functions:

  • Manage the Chief Engineer's department in Space Avionics

  • Accountable for all technical, cost and schedule performance for engineering scope.

  • Maintains the interface between Customers, Program Management and Engineering on the program.

  • Accountable for all the responsibilities as listed for Lead Project Engineer and Chief Systems Engineer.

  • Technical authority for all requirements, architectures, designs, integration & tests related to the program.

  • Provide technical direction throughout the program’s lifecycle.

  • Responsible for the program technical baseline, and technical integrity of all deliverables.

  • Translate stakeholder needs, desires and concepts into high level CONOPS, clearly defined system requirements and system architecture.

  • Baseline system level requirements, allocate lower level requirements to various engineering disciplines and lead the implementation of engineering requirements within given cost, schedule and technical constraints.

  • Lead the technical development of system, interface and sub-system design through various trade studies, analyses and internal design reviews.

  • Ensure the delivery of solutions are contractually compliant to requirements and customer needs.

  • Ensure the collection, management, analysis and reporting of engineering metrics and TPMs.

  • Provide overall technical direction to the operation team to help strengthen processes and procedures required for reducing issues in the field and providing effective troubleshooting for deployed solutions.

  • Provide technical management of engineering subcontractors and suppliers through regular interactions, development of technical documentation, and coordinating cost review and design review activities. Also, working with them to strengthen joint operational procedures for deployed solutions.

    Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field with a minimum of 15 years prior related experience. Graduate Degree with a minimum of 13 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 19 years of prior related experience.

  • 10 Years minimum experience in circuit design for avionics units.

  • 10 Years minimum experience in engineering development efforts on new avionics products (minimum of 5 of those years leading the development team)

  • Strong technical customer interface skills

  • 3 Years minimum experience in managing chief program engineers

    Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Avionics and circuit knowledge

  • Engineering operational systems, including CAD (where applicable), the actual design process, and the design release process

  • Knowledge of the various tools available to analyze the product and how to use those tools, and is briefed on how those tools contribute to the health of the assigned product

  • Has specific knowledge of the assigned product qualification status, certification, interfaces, and historical performance data

  • Has specific knowledge of Systems Engineering processes related to Space Avionics portfolio

  • Has specific knowledge of the models and tools associated with the Space Avionics portfolio

  • Is qualified to disposition non-conformances for the Space portfolio

  • Demonstrates good visibility and relationships with interfacing product chief engineers, other functional organizations, customers and subcontractors

  • Demonstrates the ability to perform causal analysis to identify physical, process, and systemic causes and corrective/preventive actions

  • Demonstrates the ability to communicate effectively, both oral and written

  • Willingness to pursue continuous improvement of the Space avionics portfolio

  • Willingness to accept full responsibility, accountability, and authority for success of all Space avionics products

  • Willingness to be available during critical processes and decisions involving the assigned product to ensure critical workflow continues

  • Management of the Space Technology plan, technology and mission roadmaps, and IRAD/ERAD planning and execution. Trend analysis, product improvement activities and obsolescence management for the portfolio is required
