Laboratory Foreman
Job Summary:
The Marathon Martinez Renewable Refinery has a Laboratory Foreman position available. The Lab Foreman works in the Refinery Laboratory overseeing daily laboratory operations: coordinates and supports testing for the Refinery meeting the needs of internal and external customers. The role coordinates lab hourly activities which include scheduling, training, supply ordering, and general supervision of hourly employees, and is a liaison with laboratory chemists. The position will be responsible for being a leader and champion of an inclusive work environment, quality data, safety, value addition, continuous improvement, and customer focus. The foreman will display and foster strong and effective communications within the laboratory and between other departments. Successful candidates must possess robust leadership and interpersonal skills, as the position will require interaction with a diverse group of direct reports in addition to Operations, Maintenance, Tech Services, Products Control, and other groups within the refinery. The hours of the position 9/80 or 5/40 and after hour support and on-call as needed.
Key Responsibilities
Coordinate and prioritize the activities of laboratory technicians/testers by ensuring that tests are conducted accurately, safely, and efficiently. Evaluate workload across jobs and adjusts lab technician test method responsibilities as necessary.
Understand the nature of how laboratory tests are conducted and are able to interpret results.
Respond to requests for expedited or special laboratory testing and communicates the results to the appropriate customers.
Manage union hourly employees. Handle all administrative duties pertaining to technician staffing including scheduling, payroll administration, and performance appraisals and discipline process.
Drive safety programs and conducts safety meetings with lab staff. Ensure safety requirements are met (PPE, hood use, etc.)
Ensure samples are analyzed in a timely manner. Manage lab testing backlog. Ensure laboratory technicians are compliant with regulatory testing requirements, including following test method procedures, safety procedures, and proper response to SQC chart violations
Report incidents in Intelex. Participate and lead Intelex investigations, MCO and PMOC. Participate in audits and the closure of findings.
Ensure technicians have the supplies, equipment, training and resources they need to perform daily jobs successfully. Manage lab training program
Manage laboratory facility maintenance including HVAC and general repairs and/or changes. Write work request and work permits as needed
Lead lab communications with Refinery Area Team to support refinery business needs. Communicate regularly with operations and product control personnel to ensure proper work priorities and workloads.
Help manage Laboratory Information Management System and Product Certification updates and changes as applicable.
Education, Experience and Skills
Minimum Qualifications
Must have High School Diploma/GED and 10 years of laboratory experience in a refinery OR Must have a Bachelors Degree in Science related discipline with a minimum of 4 chemistry classes and 2 chemistry lab courses and 5 years of laboratory experience in a refinery, petro-chemical or related industry or other third party labs. (Education must be achieved by start date.)
Must possess proficiency with ASTM Applicable Testing Methods and QAQC Requirements.
Must be proficient in Microsoft: Word, Excel and Outlook.
Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery (respirator), be able to physically perform all tasks in the field and take hair drug test and physical.
Must have a valid driver’s license. (MPC determines valid status.)
Must be able to obtain a TWIC card.
Must be legally authorized to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship.
Travel Requirement is 5% or less.

Preferred Qualifications
Supervisory or lead experience is preferred.
LIMS knowledge is preferred.
