Martensdale-St. Marys Community School District Assistant Director of Operations in Martensdale, Iowa

Martensdale-St. Marys (MStM) Community School District is a public school nestled just 15 miles south of the Des Moines metropolitan area, about 15 miles west of Indianola, and 10 miles south of Norwalk. Students in grades PK-12 come together in one building to really create a culture of community. Around 575 students are enrolled in the district and many are from families that have generationally called Martensdale and St. Marys home. The school offers a full complement of courses for all academic interests, including working closely with local business and DMACC; and also offers a wide variety of co- and extracurricular activities that meet the needs of all diverse learners. The school and communities are well known for their value in tradition and excellence.

Position Purpose Under general supervision of the Director of Operations, the individual will be responsible for providing a variety of support functionsin the areas of operations, transportation, and buildings and grounds.

Essential Performance Responsibilities

  • Assists in the development and enforcement of policies, procedures, and protocols for transportation operations
  • Establishes and administers schedules and procedures for the safe routing of school bus transportation
  • Assists in the development and administration of a comprehensive training program for transportation employees
  • Works with the Director of Operations in managing the annual budget for the transportation
  • Provides planning support and knowledge of transportation equipment to administrators and committees for planning efforts
  • Assists with the interpretation of federal, state and local codes and helps maintain compliance
  • Coordinates and provides for repairs and preventative maintenance on district transportation equipment
  • Develops and coordinates on-call emergency assistance for transportation needs
  • Offers recommendations related to weather-related school closings
  • Assists in the development of a system for emergency response that may arise in the transportation of students
  • Prepares reports for the administration as requested
  • Responds positively to the needs of administrators, staff and community members
  • During cold weather start all buses being used for the day/event
  • May be asked to drive a regular school bus route
  • Assists in the preparation and maintenance of all reports as required by the district,
  • Department of Transportation, Department of Education, any other federal and/or state agency, including drug testing for bus drivers
  • Responsible for scheduling, supervising, and recording safety drills, inspections and daily route sheets
  • Work cooperatively with the Director of Operations and facility staff to maintain all outdoor ground facilities and in developing a comprehensive grounds plan
  • Possess, or be willing to obtain, appropriate certifications for outside spraying
  • Develops and institutes a preventive maintenance plan for all outside equipment, e.g., mowers, skid loaders, etc.
  • Provides recommendations on condition of equipment and/or replacement of outside grounds equipment
  • Works cooperatively with facility personnel as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Operations
