Job Description
The Iowa Veterans Home is looking to hire a full time HVAC Technician. Hours for this position are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Also, will be ‘on call’ for the General Maintenance Shop on a rotating basis.
The responsibilities of this position include but not limited to:
Maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing air-conditioning equipment at this institution.
Performs regular scheduled preventative maintenance on all air-conditioning equipment, refrigeration and associated equipment. All units are tested by a variety of audible, visual and mechanical tests to determine operational status of equipment and to diagnose and isolate any malfunctioning components.
Performs regular scheduled preventative maintenance on closed loop hydronic systems, both heated and chilled. Includes inspection and repair of pumps, motors, valves, coils and controls.
Inspects oil levels, belts, insulation, refrigerant levels, filters, and observes pressure and vacuum gauges, adjusts controls to regulate and insure proper operation of equipment.
Cleans and maintains evaporator coils, condensing coils, and chilled water coils assuring clean and proper operation.
Maintains dampers, blowers, motors, pumps, pneumatic and electrical controls, valves, switches, humidification and emissivity for proper operation.
Maintains proper documentation on preventative maintenance software system for each unit, insuring history for use in evaluating operations, parts inventory, and future replacement life cycle.

Under the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS’s) new vaccine mandate for healthcare workers (published on November 5, 2021 and affirmed by the United States Supreme Court on January 13, 2022), all potential employees of this facility must have received, at a minimum, the first dose of a primary series or a single dose vaccine OR have an approved religious or medical exemption (as determined by the Iowa Veterans Home) OR have documentation reflecting a temporary delay in vaccination (as determined by the agency in accordance with CDC allowances), prior to the start date. Candidates shall coordinate with agency staff to ensure all requirements are met before the individual provides any care, treatment, or other services for the facility and/or its residents.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Experience equal to five years of full-time work in the installation, maintenance, repair and operation of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, boilers, refrigeration, ancillary equipment, and building automated systems related to HVAC;
OR
an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting 30 semester hours of accredited post high school education in HVAC for each year of the required experience to a maximum substitution of two years.

Additional Qualification Requirements
Within a period of time as determined by the appointing authority, persons in this class may be required to obtain a license to perform electrical work in accordance with Chapter 103, Iowa Code.
Within a period of time as determined by the appointing authority, certain employees in this class may be required to obtain a Fire Sprinkler Installer and Maintenance License in accordance with Chapter 100D, Iowa Code.
Must possess a valid driver's license.
Must be able to obtain Class B commercial driver's license.
Must be able to obtain certifications as required by regulatory authorities pertaining to HVAC, boilers, and refrigeration.
Must be capable of obtaining forklift and other material handling equipment operator's permits as necessary.
Must be willing to work weekends and after hours on a rotational basis performing boiler operations and must be willing to respond to alarm pager on weekends and after hours on a rotational basis.
