Summary

The Welder 2 is responsible for performing quality welding of parts and fixtures in the railcar manufacturing process. This position visually inspects weld work, and repairs defective welds by fitting tank car parts into jigs and fixtures, performing complicated manual or semi-automatic arc welding and other welding processes to attach fixtures to a railcar using various equipment such as welding machines, torches, and hand tools.

Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform the following essential duties satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned to address business needs and changing business practices.

  • Fits, aligns, and clamps tank car parts, usually in jigs and fixtures, to prepare for welding steel and performs complicated manual or semi-automatic arc welding of railcar parts, sub-assemblies, and assemblies on the bench, floor, or assembly line.

  • Operates weld machine maintaining heat and speed of travel to assure penetration and weld bead size, removes weld slag, and preheats work, according to written weld processes.

  • Visually inspects weld work, repairs defective welds, performs minor repairs to equipment and performs occasional air arc or flame cutting to help repair defective welds.

  • Assists in training other welders by conducting on the job training when requested.

  • Reads and comprehends blueprints or weld drawings and procedures.

  • Ensures that safety and housekeeping standards are met and maintained and performs other duties as directed by the Production Group Leader.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to pass applicable weld assessments to perform work as a welder 2

  • Ability to use weld gauges and computers

  • Ability to read and comprehend blueprints or weld drawings and procedures

  • Ability to work in a team

  • Ability to learn to operate a forklift and overhead crane and complete certifications required through company training

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school education or equivalent

  • One year of experience in production welding.

  • Experience operating a forklift

  • Experience operating an overhead crane

  • Employee may be required to perform work at heights above four feet or within confined spaces. Employees working in these conditions will be required to wear fall protection harness/lanyard.

  • Some areas may require the use of a respirator while working. Employees working in these areas must be able to pass a respirator fit test and be clean-shaven while wearing a respirator
