WestRock Company Senior Die Cutter Operator in Marion, North Carolina

GENERAL PURPOSE: The Lead Die Cutter Operator is required to work closely between the Cutting Department, Die Shop, Structural Design, and the Scheduling to ensure tooling is available and prepared for each Production Job in the scheduled in the Cutting Department. This position will play a key role in the timely delivery of orders to customers as well as reducing lag time due to tooling issues. The Cutter Lead will monitor jobs entered into the production schedule and update the status each day. This role will also work closely with Pre Make-Ready to ensure they are aware of any important tooling updates/changes. Along with new tooling, this position will also coordinate the requests to repair or change any tooling as requested by operators and outlined on the Cutting Tooling Process Checklist Forms. This position reports to the Cutting Manager.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Must understand the tooling characteristics required by customers including rule-types, embossing, foil-stamping, die boards, stripping units, blanking units, counters, plates, etc.

  • Monitor the schedule, meet scheduled production goals, and provide needed communication to the Cutting Manager.

  • Works with estimating to interpret job layout information.

  • Working knowledge of computer applications such as Outlook, Excel, Access, and Schedule Assistant.

  • Assist in communication between scheduling and production via verbal and digital methods.

  • Assist crews in troubleshooting issues with the machines.

  • Track the new and repeat work-orders in the database system as required.

  • Responsible for maintaining emboss and foil tool inventory.

  • Willing to work flexible hours as necessary.

  • Coverage of vacations as required by production schedule.

  • Receives, complies with, and applies all trained processes related to Job Title. Including bi-lateral communication, active engagement in Daily Management Systems (DMS), promoting and maintaining Teamwork dedication to a Safe and Quality oriented environment.

  • Correctly interprets job/product/technical specifications, and information required to operate, and maintain WestRock Equipment, while ensuring safety, quality, and production processes followed.

  • Responsible for make-ready of scheduled production Jobs/Orders per customer specifications; makes adjustments to various aspects of the equipment in order to accommodate change over to new/next production Job/Order (sets up all aspects of the equipment to perform within specification required to produce quality product).

  • Inspects quality of each Die Cut WIP (Work in Process) load produced; is responsible for checking random sheets from each cut load to ensure and maintain quality to customer specification.

  • Check, verify, and sign off on Approvals of Production Jobs Made-Ready by peers at any/all Cutters throughout the respective Shift, advise if and what corrections need to be made prior to Approval.

  • If cutting defects are encountered; ends production until defect is corrected, removes cutting generated defects from good product, gets deposition of non-conforming product and tags non-conformity; troubleshoots machinery and makes proper corrections to continue processing the Job/Order.

  • Maintains accurate written records of production by recording production and all Job/Work related information in compliance with WestRock Marion Document Control processes.

  • Operates Die Cutting equipment to achieve maximum quality production throughout job processes; consistently achieving excellent performance during make-readies and production runs while minimizing downtime in order to meet Facility, Departmental, and Machine Goals/Metrics.

  • Utilizes Powered and Unpowered Industrial Trucks/Equipment to handle material to and from Die Cutting Equipment.

  • Performs preventive maintenance duties on Die Cutting equipment as necessary.

  • Trains, Mentors, and directs Die Cutting Apprentice personnel in cutting processes, operation, and troubleshoot skills.

  • Conforms with and abides by all regulations, policies, work procedures, safety rules, security procedures and instruction and direction of Department Manager, Shift Supervisors, and other WestRock Leadership.

  • Performs all duties according to established safety policy, including wearing all required PPEs to perform duties, tasks, job functions while in Production Area.

  • This position will help keep the department within the specifications of all 5S and SQF guidelines, and immediately report any food safety concerns to management.

  • Performs other duties as requested by Supervisor or Management.

  • Failure to comply with any/all WestRock Regulations, Policies, Procedures, and Work Instructions will result in Coaching/Counseling/Corrective processes up to and/or including discharge of employment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have high school diploma or G.E.D.

  • 1 to 2 years of work-related experience in a die cutting manufacturing environment preferred.

  • Prior experience as a Cutting Operator.

  • Effective training and presentation skills.

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

  • Good communication skills

  • Good computer skills.

  • Good problem-solving skills.

  • Manages time and sets priorities for tasks.

  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment.

  • Ability to work with little supervision.

  • Good attendance record.

  • Good mathematical ability, including good understanding of measurements.

  • Must comply with all local and corporate policies.

  • Mechanical aptitude.
