Varian Medical Systems Field Service Engineer in Manchester, United Kingdom

Main Responsibilities:

  • Provides highly visible customer support through the performance of on-site operation, corrective and preventive maintenance of the proton therapy equipment and ancillary devices

  • Overseeing any necessary diagnoses, troubleshooting, service, and repair of complex equipment and systems

  • Checks out and approves operational quality of system equipment

  • Instructs customers in the operation and maintenance of the system

  • Serves as company liaison with customer on administrative and technical matters for assigned projects

  • Interprets customers’ needs and clarifies if the responsibility for problem resolution falls to sales personnel, customer support reps, or engineers

  • May include any aspect of field support, and is not limited to system hardware and software, PCs, and networking/wireless networking

  • Installs and upgrades a wide range of company products according to technical documentation and company guidelines to ensure that customer’s equipment operates efficiently

  • Maintain technical documentation regarding operating characteristics, design factors, technical performance and development of products to improve installation efficiency


  • Associate Degree or equivalent related experience

  • Experience in one or more of the following areas, preferably within medical device environment:

  • Particle accelerators (cyclotrons, LINACs)

  • Diagnostic imaging equipment (X-ray tubes/generators)

  • Power supplies (high current/voltage)

  • Vacuum systems (roughing pumps, TMPs)

  • Heavy rotating mechanical equipment

  • Beam optics and tuning of high energy proton beam

  • Ability to communicate effectively with various levels of employees and customers both verbally and in writing

  • Self-disciplined and the ability to work independently on assigned tasks

  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken

  • Willingness to work shift work pattern environment

Work environment:

  • Job operates in the hospital environment

  • Environment with devices of high levels of radiation, high magnetic fields, high voltages, compressed and liquefied gases and radioactive materials

  • Frequently in contact with electrical equipment

  • May work from ladders or scaffolding, on occasion

  • May lift, carry, push, or pull up to 22 kilograms

  • Occasionally twist and crawl. Frequently stand, walk, stoop, kneel, and extended reach

  • Use of personal protective equipment may be required including, but not limited to, radiation monitoring badge, safety glasses, hard hat, hard toed shoes, and medical rubber gloves
