Illinois Tool Works, Inc. Maintenance Mechanic - 1st shift - $1,000 sign-on bonus in Manchester, Connecticut

Our products are segmented into three (3) distinctive markets:

Cosmetics and Personal Care (our labeling solutions are used on high-end brands for bottles, cosmetic jars, containers, as well as, children branded toothbrushes, shaving razors, mascara & lipstick tubes).

Sportswear ( our top quality, decorative solutions are applied to performance apparel and general lifestyle garments (brand imaging, sponsor logos,). Our S ports Equipment labels are applied to hard surfaces (golf clubs, protective ski wear, etc.).

Transportation (highly tailored resolutions applied on power transmission belts, hoses, car & bike tires, and automotive safety labels.

SUMMARY : Apply troubleshooting skills when repairing and resolve printing/production machines. on the manufacturing floor.

Note: The machines on the manufacturing floor are unique to ITW Graphics and were designed and developed in-house several years ago. Therefore, this role requires an individuals that has strong mechanical aptiitude and is willing to take the time to learn how these machines operate and can quickly apply these new skills when faced with a mechanical malfunction. This individual will receive hands-on training from another experienced maintenance mechanic.


Understands how to interpret and follow blueprints, drawings, schematics and verbal instructions to plan,and layout assignments.

Repairs, rebuilds, wires, troubleshoots and maintains machines and equipment, using tools and/or equipment available in the Maintenance Department.

Troubleshoots and repairs mechanical and electrical equipment and systems requiring the isolation of the malfunction, disassembly of equipment and repair/replacement of bearings, gears, structural components and the like as well as electronic sensors and controls.

Performs preventive maintenance on equipment and mechanical systems.

Works proactively and identifies, detects and repairs any improper operation, faulty equipment or unusual conditions that may affect safety or manufacturing.

Assembles and installs mechanical and electrical equipment and systems such as production machinery/tools, storage racks and tanks, facility equipment, etc.

Performs general plant maintenance jobs on plumbing, lighting, machine wiring etc.

Responsible for maintenance shop including tools and supply inventories.

Initiates/prepares purchase orders for inventory/non-stock items for approval.

Corrects safety inspector's recommendations to conform to OSHA requirements.

Initiates and reviews bids for necessary contractual work. Oversees vendors to assure work is completed in a timely manner and is correct.

Must be able to work with a minimum of supervision.

Maintains work area in a clean and orderly condition.

Comply with all current ISO standards.

Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

Associates degree in Engineering and three to five years related experience and/or formal training, certification or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Skills and Abilities:

Working knowledge and proficiency of:·

  • Mechanical systems principals such as gearing, timing, travel/flow rates, etc.

  • Programming of controllers and drives

  • Prefer individual have formal electrical systems/electronic training to perform:

  • Electronic controls such as logic controllers and drives;

  • Electronic sensors such as photoelectric, laser and proximity sensors


Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, blueprints and assembly drawings, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively with co-workers and managers.


Basic math skills - ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, decimals, basic algebra, geometry and trigonometry.


Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.


Forklift license expeience to obtain license.


Ability to read blueprints and wiring schematics and use a wide variety of hand, power, and machine tools to perform assignments. Must have a basic understanding of machine wiring and control circuits.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles and risk of electrical shock. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
