Job Description
PURPOSE OF POSITION
To manage animal care and support employees/volunteers in providing excellent animal care, facility cleaning, customer service, organizational efficiencies, and precise record keeping. Support the Animal Care Manager in developing and improving the Animal Care program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Lead initiatives to p rovide overall animal care including appropriate quantity of food/water, bathing and basic grooming to shelter animals daily .
Oversee appropriate monitoring of animals and ensure health, behavior, or temperament issues are immediately reported to medical staff, behavior staff, or supervisor, and enter into animal database as appropriate.
Lead and participate in stress and disease reduction efforts through purposeful and compassionate handling and placement of animals in the shelter environment.
Responsible for overseeing and executing enrichment of animals; including getting dogs outside for bathroom breaks regularly, enrichment in their kennels, and other duties.
Oversee and e nter animal information (data) into animal management database.
Facility Care
Lead and follow established disease control protocols to clean, disinfect, and maintain shelter kennels, cages, and all animal and general areas as assigned and instructed daily
Oversee and o perate laundry, cleaning, dishwashing and other equipment.
Ensure restocking of cleaning, feeding and other supply areas and inform the Animal Care Manager when reordering is necessary.
Oversee and m aintain equipment in good working condition and report need for repair or replacement of equipment to the Animal Care Manager.
Assist in cleaning and maintenance of entire facility and grounds, as directed.
People Care
Cultivate positive customer relations through professional, courteous, and educational interactions while actively promoting our mission, services, programs and events.
Provide prompt, courteous and excellent service to all internal and external customers at all times, including but not limited to staff, volunteers, board members, city and county officials and animal control officers, veterinarians, representatives of other rescue organizations, people looking for lost pets, and the general public.
Work cooperatively with all volunteers, recognizing the talent and commitment they bring to the organization.
Courteously and professionally direct the assigned tasks of community service workers.
Additional Responsibilities
Demonstrate knowledge of and adherence to ARL policies and procedures.
Ensure a safe work environment, follow all safety guidelines, and model safe work practices.
Take immediate action to address any safety concerns that could put a staff member, volunteer, customer, animal or the organization at risk.
Perform other duties as assigned at any Animal Rescue League locations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Animal care and customer service experience required.
Availability to work weekends, evenings, holidays and overtime if needed.
Commitment to the mission, values, goals and success of the Animal Rescue League of Iowa with compassion and genuine affection for animals.
Highly motivated with strong communication skills and an outgoing, polite and professional manner.
Team player and self-starter, able to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.
Ability to mentor and train new employees. Must be willing to share expertise in ways that motivate others.
May be asked to conduct new employee evaluations to identify areas of improvement.
Commitment to streamline and improve processes for entire team.
Must be available to be a point of contact for concerns or issues when Animal Care Managers are not available.
Ensure new hires understand standard operation procedures and check for competency.
Shadowing new hires after training initial training is complete
High levels of communication between Team Leads and Animal Care M anager
Good documentation skills.

It is the policy of the Animal Rescue League that employment for this position is at will, which means that employment is for no specific term and that employment may be terminated by the employee or the Animal Rescue League at any time without cause.
