Microsoft Corporation Construction Area EHS Manager in Madrid, Spain

Microsoft Cloud Operations + Innovation (CO+I)) is the engine that powers Microsoft's cloud services. The team is responsible for designing, building and operating our unified global datacenters; managing the demand planning and capacity utilization of our unified infrastructure; and all of the operations needed to run the physical infrastructure (including supply chain, hardware, power, security, and workflow teams). We focus on smart growth with an emphasis on automation, data driven engineering, cost-effectiveness and environmental sustainability.

We deliver the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's over 200 online businesses including Bing, MSN, Office 365, Xbox Live, Skype, OneDrive and the Microsoft Azure platform. Our infrastructure is comprised of a large global portfolio of more than 160 datacenters and 2 million servers. Our portfolio is built and managed by a team of subject matter experts working 24x7x365 to support services for more than 1 billion customers and 20 million businesses in over 90 countries worldwide.

We are looking for an Construction Area EHS Manager who will be CO+I’s representative for safety, supporting of the Site Acquisition, Datacenter Execution and Engineering business groups in Spain / Iberia. This encompasses EHS factors associated with facility siting analysis, design, construction, and commissioning for owned and leased assets, and may include processes for:

  • Construction and Contractor Safety

  • Safety in Design

  • Environmental in Design and Construction

  • Facility location analysis for EHS

This is a highly influential position reporting to the Regional Director, Construction and Design Safety.  Position location is in Spain and within daily travel to the greater Madrid area . (This is not a remote working position)

The Area EHS Manager must be an experienced and recognized technical expert in Construction and Design Safety, to include incorporation of safety into business and project management processes. His/her mission is to assist program safety leads, business line Regional Directors, and Project Managers with advancing safety programs and culture for both the lease and build portfolios. This will be achieved through development, implementation and execution of corporate and business line safety procedures, training, and safety leadership mentorship. S/he will monitor risks, trends and leading/lagging metrics, then develop reports and management review content that will be used to drive accountability and action. There will be extensive interaction with a diverse range of business partners, peers and stakeholders inside and outside of the company.

The span and complexity of our activities requires advanced knowledge and technical specialization in construction and design safety management to recognize and control risks.

Responsibilities

  • Work with leaders, staff and contractors at all levels and in multiple cultures to implement effective solutions.

  • Drive supplier safety performance through safety leadership engagement, collaborative forums, and contractual assurance actions.

  • Evaluate EHS risks during site selection, design, construction, and commissioning activities and ensure actions are taken to mitigate risks.

  • Work with business partners and peer EHS teams to ensure the transition from datacenter delivery to datacenter operations is smooth and risks are adequately mitigated.

  • Drive a standardized and harmonized approach across datacenter activities to maximize efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Present on a regular basis to various leadership teams.

  • Interface with local, national and international regulatory agencies on safety issues.

  • Interpret safety standards and regulatory requirements to assure compliance and aggressive management of risk.

  • Establish risk mitigation goals and develop metrics, dashboards and/or scorecards to track/communicate/drive progress.

  • Analyze leading & lagging safety metrics and communicate results to leadership to drive action and accountability.

  • Provide training to staff.

  • Carry out routine safety program, project, and contractor audits.

  • Perform and participate in incident investigations.

Qualifications

Education: A University/Bachelor's degree or equivalent level of degree in science, engineering or related Safety/SHE discipline/degree is required.

Experience : Experience in Construction and Design Safety is required, with demonstrated knowledge and experience controlling the broad spectrum of safety risks.

The successful candidate will have a strong record of accomplishment preventing injuries, developing/implementing robust processes and management systems, and in building productive collaborative relationships with internal/external business partners.

The successful candidate will be a strong communicator & influencer who is credible, self-assured and highly capable of negotiating successful outcomes with key business leaders…...while at the same time being flexible to different approaches and changing business priorities. S/he will have strong technical skills and the ability to describe and write complex issues/requirements in a clear and concise manner. S/he will apply previous learning and ideas to new situations, projects and teams, developing creative solutions to manage risk. S/he will demonstrate strong business acumen that includes experience working with business partners at various levels and functions.

Excellent communication and project management skills are required, including the ability to lead teams, produce and maintain timelines, manage multiple commitments and assemble project information into clear, concise written reports.
