Job Overview:

APTIM's Sustainability Solutions team is seeking a motivated experienced Energy Engineer who demonstrates a commitment to and enthusiasm for Energy Efficiency. Successful candidates will have experience conducting onsite energy audits and desk reviews to evaluate energy usage and identify energy saving and related improvement opportunities. This role will be responsible for evaluating the economic, engineering, or pragmatic feasibility of energy efficiency improvement projects. The energy engineer will also engage in programmatic work with the Focus on Energy team. Focus on Energy is one of the longest standing energy efficiency and clean energy programs in the country. This award-winning program serves 107 utility territories across the Wisconsin market and supports more than 50,000 energy efficiency projects annually. Additionally, Focus on Energy was recently awarded the implementation work for the federally funded IRA Home Energy Rebate programs.

The successful candidate will lead energy audits and technical reviews. This role requires a dynamic individual with a solutions-focus approach who communicates across functional teams to exchange ideas, embraces a collaborative approach, and finds solutions to challenges as they arise. Candidates must be able to manage multiple tasks with competing deadlines, be well-versed in energy efficiency analysis and equipment, have excellent written and verbal communication skills, and be able to maintain positive relationships with colleagues, clients, and contractors. The role requires a person who is accountable, process driven, and pragmatic.

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

  • Act as a subject matter expert in existing and emerging energy efficiency, renewable energy, and electrification technologies, and strategies to decarbonize new and existing buildings.

  • Understand and communicate technical elements of energy consuming equipment in commercial, industrial, and residential buildings and how it affects utility consumption and demand.

  • Review customer incentive applications for energy savings projects to ensure completion and accuracy, such as confirming detailed savings calculations.

  • Review energy efficiency and renewable energy projects to ensure calculation methodologies and assumptions are reasonable, complete, and accurate.

  • Ensure codes and regulatory standards are integrated into program design and project work.

  • Provide guidance for the resolution of technical issues and contribute as a technical expert to research projects.

  • Conduct energy audits and desk reviews to evaluate energy usage and identify energy saving and related improvement opportunities and prepare client-facing reports.

  • Conduct cost-benefit analyses, determine the potential return on investments, evaluate plans or system layouts, design objectives, align resources, and determine project scope.

  • Prepare reports and technical documents, present findings, and respond to client questions.

  • Lead or support strategic energy management sessions with clients.

  • Lead or support the design of new energy savings measures, strategies, or programs.

  • Work with other functional team leads to develop and share ideas and best practices.

  • Participate in technical proposal writing as needed.

  • Develop, refine, and implement energy-related project tools.

  • Lead or support client achievement of sustainability building certifications.

  • Promote communication and collaboration among both internal and external Focus on Energy team and Sustainability Solutions team.

  • Must be willing to travel an average of at least 50% annually .

  • Ensure compliance with all APTIM quality and safety policies as well as all OSHA regulations.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited four-year college or university.

  • 2-5+ years' project or program experience related to energy efficiency, mechanical design, energy modelling, or construction.

  • 2+ years conducting ASHRAE Level I, II, and III energy audits, identifying energy savings opportunities.

  • 2+ years reviewing Architectural, mechanical, or electrical plans.

  • Working knowledge of energy efficiency technologies and energy-saving solutions including lighting, HVAC, building envelope, and mechanical systems for both residential and non-residential customers.

  • Must be able to convey complex technical subjects to non-technical audiences.

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills; experience with client engagement and coordination.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software.

  • Advanced written and oral communication skills.

  • Experience in the design, development, and implementation of energy efficiency programs and projects.

  • Strong understanding of renewable technology and capital improvement opportunities.

  • Ability to plan, execute and deliver on projects in a timely manner, with the added ability to multi-task on varying projects and initiatives.

Desired/Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Professional Engineer (PE), Certified Energy Auditor (CEA), Building Energy Assessment Professional (BEAP), Building Energy Modeling Professional (BEMP), WELL, and/or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)

  • Energy efficiency: 3 years

  • Mechanical design: 1 year

  • Energy modelling or construction: 2 years
