The Waisman Center is dedicated to the advancement of knowledge about human development, developmental disabilities, and neurodegenerative diseases throughout the lifespan. One of 14 centers of its kind in the United States, the Waisman Center encompasses laboratories for biomedical and behavioral research, a brain imaging center, and a clinical biomanufacturing facility for the production of pharmaceuticals for early stage human clinical trials. In addition to its research efforts, the Center provides an array of services to people with developmental disabilities, offers numerous educational and outreach programs to young children and their families, and trains scientists and clinicians who will serve our nation in the future.
The science writer will focus on disseminating and promoting information to build public awareness of the Waisman Center's research and clinical development through press releases, web stories, newsletters, and social media. This position will also provide support for special events, various publicity efforts, conferences, facility tours, and other awareness mechanisms. The duties of this position are performed in collaboration with others in the Waisman Center Communications team.

Degree and Area of Specialization:
Bachelor's degree required, preferably in public relations, journalism, communications, or a related field.
Dual degree or advanced degree in a scientific discipline is preferred. Optionally, an advanced degree in public relations, journalism, communications or related field with a bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline would also be preferred.
Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:
Well-qualified applicants will have the following preferred experience:
- One year or more of professional experience working in public relations, journalism or a position requiring
strong written and verbal communication skills (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).
Demonstrated experience in science writing is highly preferred.
The ability to communicate sometimes complicated biological and behavioral scientific material in
a concise, clear and accessible manner using a broad range of communications platforms to varied target
and general audiences, including print and broadcast news media, social media, scientists, educators,
students, physicians, government and industry officials, and the public.
Organizational skills to lead the planning and execution of multiple projects.
Attentiveness to detail, proofreading and copy-editing skills, familiarity with AP Stylebook, and adherence
to all deadlines.
- Desktop publishing proficiency and experience using Window's based PCs, MS Office Programs,
Adobe programs including InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
A willingness to work flexible hours is required with some weekends and evenings mandatory. Occasional overnight travel required.
A Criminal Background Check will be performed.
Must complete HIPAA training and receive certification within the first 5 days of employment and annually.
Reporting requirements must be completed in a timely manner, including but not limited to effort reporting and outside activities reporting.
Must possess or be eligible to acquire valid Wisconsin driver's license that meets the criteria for University of Wisconsin - Madison Risk Management use of a state-owned vehicle upon hire.
