Summary The Incumbent serves as a Research Geneticist in the Vegetable Crops Research Unit, Madison, WI. The incumbent evaluates genetic diversity, genomic complexity and phylogenetic relationships of crop wild relatives of potato and carrot. Expands genomic resources and characterizes genotypic and phenotypic variation in crop wild relatives. ANNOUNCEMENT IS OPEN UNTIL FILLED OR July 15, 2022 WHEN THE ANNOUNCEMENT CLOSES Responsibilities Evaluates genetic diversity, genomic complexity, and phylogenetic relationships of crop wild relatives of potato and carrot. Expands genomic resources, characterize genotypic and phenotypic variation in crop wild relatives, and develop approaches to facilitate introgression of favorable genetic variation from crop wild relatives to vegetable crops. Analyze of complex multi-omic datasets, gene cloning, sequencing and analysis; and evaluation of genetic relationships based upon molecular and phenotypic characterization. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications This position requires a recent Ph.D in genetics, bioinformatics, genomics, computational biology, plant breeding, or a related field of study that has equipped the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. Knowledge of basic bioinformatic tools to investigate and analyze genetic diversity, and experience in genetics, molecular biology, and advanced genomic technologies is expected. Experience with high-performance computing platforms, design and management of databases, trait phenotyping, marker-trait relationship analysis such as QTL or GWAS, molecular cloning, and functional genomics is highly desirable. Applicants must meet basic Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standard's requirements of the scientific discipline necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. Basic Requirements Degree: genetics; or one of the basic biological sciences that included at least 9 semester hours in genetics.Or Graduate Education: Genetics, or a curriculum or pattern of training that placed major emphasis on genetics. Graduate study in related fields such as agronomy, horticulture, animal, dairy, or poultry husbandry, entomology, microbiology, plant pathology, chemistry, molecular and cellular biology, and physiology that involved cross-training in genetics is qualifying, provided it placed sufficient emphasis on genetics. Education This position has a positive education requirement.
