The purpose of the position is to perform as a Painter applying coating materials on wood, metal, glass, synthetic, concrete, and other surfaces. Responsibilities This Painter position is located in the Engineering Service at the William S. Middleton VA Hospital in Madison, WI and is part of the VA's Great Lakes Health Care System in the Veteran's Integrated Service Network (VISN 12). Major Duties: Redecorating offices, wards, corridors, dining halls, living quarters, and shop buildings. Preparing coating material by tinting, toning, matching, blending, and mixing various additives. Painting and refinishing furniture, wood and metal, such as desks, cabinets, chairs, operating room and laundry equipment. Applying special finishing techniques such as marbling and graining. Glazing and caulking windows on air conditioning equipment, cutting and installing. Cutting stencil, painting signs and blending and mixing colors Installing vinyl wall coverings, hanging paper, etc. Prepares and coats surfaces from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms, and where the surfaces to be coated are in cramped and hard-to-reach places. Qualifications To qualify you must submit a complete application by the closing date of this announcement. Your application must demonstrate experience and knowledge of any of the accepted surface preparation and coating methods and techniques. Skill in matching, tinting, toning, and blending coating materials and in combining agents with coating materials. Knowledge of how to build up, shape and level surfaces, with metal and synthetic resins, plastics, and patching compounds, obtain finely smoothed surfaces with abrasive compounds, pumice, and rottenstone, even out dents and scars, by burning-in processes and treat surfaces with pre-coating agents. Ability to read and apply directions that relate to the mixture, use and application of various kinds of materials. Skill in the use of tools and equipment such as brushes, rollers, spray guns, trowels, screeds, straight edges, viscosity testers, graining devices, and wet and other thickness gauges. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: This position requires the employee to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The employee frequently lifts, carries and sets up equipment that weigh up to 10 pounds. Occasionally, the employee may handle materials that weigh 40 pounds or over.
