13339BRDepartment Name:HSP Medical Library Location:Meriter Hospital Job Description: The Medical Librarian administers the professional resources in the Medical Library, both in paper and electronic format, to help meet the informational needs of Meriter medical staff members, affiliated clinicians and Meriter staff and affiliated staff. This position also maintains the Medical Library and Performance Improvement department homepages on the hospital’s intranet, the team worksites for the Research Council, and other relevant Performance Improvement Committees and workgroups. This position provides one-on-one computer training with the professional staff and group training sessions with departments on literature searching and serves on the following committees: Meriter Education Committee, Research Council, and Root Cause Analysis Team.

Responsibilities:

Day-to-day operation of library services at Meriter

  • Includes performing literature searches to meet the information needs of Medical Staff members, affiliated clinicians and Meriter staff.

  • Coordinates interlibrary loans, and circulation of library materials.

  • Provide reference services by phone, email, or in-person

  • Conduct one-on-one training with professional staff regarding database searching for health information and group training for rotating nursing students.

  • Identifies resource needs and makes recommendations concerning equipment and facilities.

  • Prepares appropriate reports for hospital administration concerning the library.

  • Participates in the Research Council, providing expertise in online searching.

  • Participates in the Root Cause Analysis Team and ad hoc on other quality improvement teams, conducting literature searches to support the investigation and development of action plans.

    On-Line Resources and Resource Development

  • Formulate goals, objectives and long-range plans of the library in accordance with hospital objectives.

  • Plan and direct maintenance of the collection including book purchasing, journal renewals, electronic databases and cataloging.

  • Coordinate library services to provide electronic access to materials while also maintaining the integrity of the book and journal collections.

  • Identify and eliminate costly duplication of services and find newer, less expense ways of delivering the services we now provide and expanding or changing services to best meet the evolving information needs of our users.

  • Negotiate complex license agreements for electronic resources and take part in “library consortium” group purchasing whenever possible for discount pricing opportunities.

  • Maintains the Medical Library and Performance Improvement department homepage on the hospital’s intranet. Including online resource development and access to full-text journals and electronic text material, vendor license agreements.

    Table of Contents Service

  • Coordinate the electronic Table of Contents service to Meriter staff (includes physicians, allied health professionals, nurses and administrative staff).

  • Includes development of electronic access to materials.

  • Daily emailing of table of contents links.

  • Filling article requests generated by the service.

  • Updating RSS feeds to the table of contents links on Medical Library page on Meriter’s intranet site.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s in Library Science or related field

  • Three to five years related experience.

  • Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.

  • Knowledge of medical/nursing databases and resources

  • Proficiency in conducting online searches

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Word, Excel and PowerPoint

  • Skill in oral and written communication

  • Ability to maintain extraordinary customer service

  • Ability to work and make decisions independently

  • Ability to multitask and prioritize

  • Knowledge of medical terminology

    PREFERRED:

  • Master’s in Library Science

  • Additional undergraduate background in the health sciences or a specific science (biology, etc.)

  • Previous administrative duties

  • Quality Improvement experience including use of quality improvement tools (e.g., RCA, FMEA, A3)

  • Project Management
