Job Description:

APPOINTMENT: August 15, 2024

RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate will assume a range of responsibilities including but not limited to: teaching in-person and online undergraduate and graduate courses in special education, supervising student field experiences, serving on master\'s action research committees, developing and revising in-person and online courses, program planning and coordinating, participating in university, college, and departmental committee work and professional service, as well as research and scholarly activity.

RANK & SALARY: Assistant Professor, 9-month, full-time tenure track appointment. There is potential for summer employment. Salary will be commensurate with experience. Requirements:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Earned their doctoral degree (at time of appointment) in special education, or a related field, conferred from an accredited, degree-granting higher education institution. ABD will be considered if the degree is completed by August 1, 2024.
  • A minimum of three years of teaching experience in P-12 special education in U.S. schools.
  • Evidence of practical knowledge and classroom experience using research-based teaching methods for students with disabilities.
  • Evidence of successful teaching having led to student growth and development.
  • Evidence of service and leadership during their P-12 teaching experience, in educational organizations, through community volunteer work, or any other significant experience that demonstrates such qualities.
  • Evidence of collaboration and effective communication that has led to growth and development for their students, school community, broader community, and/or personally.
  • Expertise in assessment, planning for instruction, instructional and assistive technologies, special education laws, Rtl procedures and rules, and teaching methods for students with low incidence disabilities.
  • A proven record of commitment to diverse student populations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Evidence of successful scholarship and future research plans.
  • A range of P-12 U.S. special education teaching or experiences with students who have a broad range of disabilities (e.g., mild through intensive disorders, inclusion setting, assessment, IEPs, methods).
  • University teaching experience in special education or related field.
  • Experience in online instruction and development of online courses.

For a degree to be considered, it must be conferred from a regionally accredited degree-granting institution of higher education (or equivalent from an international accrediting body). Unless otherwise stated, the degree must be conferred at the time of appointment.

THE DEPARTMENT: The successful candidate will be joining Western Illinois University\'s vibrant School of Education. The School of Education houses 16-degree programs (graduate and undergraduate); numerous state teaching endorsements; a preschool; a Reading Center; a Science Center; a Social Studies Center; a Rural Education Center; and provides coursework to support undergraduate teacher education programs housed across the WIU campus.
