Medical assistants perform a variety of clinical and administrative tasks to support medical professionals in a variety of settings:
**Clinical duties:
Assisting physicians with patient exams and procedures. Taking vital signs, such as blood pressure, weight, and temperature. Collecting and preparing samples for laboratory tests. Giving patients injections or medications as directed by physicians. Applying and removing bandages and dressings. Removing sutures. Shaving and disinfecting treatment sites.
Administrative duties:
Scheduling patient appointments. Updating patient records. Managing medical records. Managing medical records. Billing and insurance. Maintaining inventory of medical and office supplies.
**Other duties:
Greeting patients in person or on the telephone. Counseling patients. Educating patients about medications and diet. Preparing patients for examinations. Communicating with patients in the waiting room. Supporting patient discharge. Identifying areas that may slow down facility operations. ** Medical assistants work under the supervision of a doctor or other medical professional in a variety of settings, including doctor's offices, Outpatient clinics, hospitals, and assisted living facilities.They are certified but not licensed, and are not permitted to diagnose, treat, or perform invasive tasks.
