Job Summary:

Lead a team of managers, examiners, technicians and specialists within the Claims Department. Accountable for setting the strategy, direction and approach to managing all aspects related to claims. As part of director responsibilities, establish processes, tools and relationships with vendors (contracts, rates, etc.), manage department budget, monitor operations and team performance, and act as the last point of escalation for issues as they arise.

Job Description:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee claims operations to ensure timely and adequate response to and processing of claims requests in order to minimize risk and legal exposure. Activities include, but are not limited to, reviewing venue, engaging outside counsel, providing guidance on settlement authority

  • Review all attorney work produced by internal and/or external counsel to ensure organizational guidelines are met; review other team member's work based on risk potential for the organization

  • Be available on call to support night safety with their questions and coordinate legal representation if necessary

  • Available to travel immediately to an accident scene to coordinate the investigation and meet in person with the claimants to minimize exposure to the company, and to attend depositions, mediations and trials to manage the outcome favorable to the company

  • Effectively maintain and/or cultivate working relationships with senior leaders/areas of the business to understand business needs, align on claim decisions, establish/review processes, as well as outside counsel and insurance carriers in order to effectively respond to claims requests

  • Work with business leaders and safety groups to identify and discuss trends, review processes, analysis safety/technology/process investment and related ROI, develop action plans to address issues

  • Provide management guidance, coaching and mentoring to team members, as needed, including other personnel actions (e.g., performance evaluations, hiring)

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of Claims and/or Litigation experience &/or military equivalent

  • Bachelor's Degree with more than 5 years in a leadership role with combination of education, experience, and training

  • AND/OR Demonstration of the following skills and abilities through education, certifications, military, or other experiences

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Licensed to practice law (and in good standing) in at least one jurisdiction

  • Ability to form strong arguments and defend a position professionally

  • Ability to maintain professionalism while dealing with difficult individuals

  • Ability to make independent, time-sensitive decisions

  • Ability to multitask

  • Ability to work both individually and as part of a team

  • Experience working in claims

  • Proficient active listening skills

  • Ability to influence business leaders and impact decision-making

  • Experience in the transportation industry

  • Experience managing/supervising a team

  • Ability to communicate effectively over the phone

  • Experience managing/supervising individuals, team and dept

  • Proficient time management skills

  • Self-motivation

Compensation:

Factors which may affect starting pay within this range may include skills, education,

experience, geography, and other qualifications of the successful candidate. This position may be eligible for

annual bonus and incentives based on profitability or volumes in accordance with the terms of the Company’s bonus

and incentive plans, as applicable and in effect from time to time.
