ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Receives, records and processes inmate law book request forms for legal materials
Researches and collects information from various sources to respond to inmate inquiries
Prepares statistical reports and maintains library of resource materials
Assists with tracking and responding to open records requests for non-confidential information related to inmates

Examples of Duties

UNDER GENERAL SUPERVISION
Reviews inmate law book request forms to determine type of materials and books needed to process requests
Accesses reference materials, queries records and files to display information and to respond to inquiries for information
Researches and copies cases, case law, KRS, KARS, jail policies and procedures, motions, briefs and affidavits from the inmate law library, public law library, other reference materials and the internet for distribution to inmates
Signs books in and out to inmates, tracks return of books, inspects books for contraband and damages and coordinates inmate payment for damaged books with administrative staff
Answers questions from inmates and provides information concerning legal interpretations, decisions and footnotes
Inventories, stocks and maintains inmate law library books and recommends new book purchases to administrative staff
Collects statistical data, maintains records and files and completes special reports
Assists with tracking and responding to open records requests for non-confidential information related to inmates and maintaining related records

Minimum Requirements

Associate's degree
Paralegal Studies

WORK EXPERIENCE
One year of paralegal experience

OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Must not have been convicted of a felony
Misdemeanor convictions will be considered on an individual basis
Must submit to a pre-employment polygraph test

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Applicants and employees in positions which perform job duties that may require contact with offenders in the custody or supervision of the Department of Juvenile Justice or with youth in the care, custody or supervision of Youth Development
must meet qualifications pursuant to the federal Prison Rape Elimination Act, 28 CFR 115.17 and 115.317, to include periodic post-employment criminal background checks

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Meets regular and punctual attendance standards and any special needs of the position as determined by management, including mandatory overtime and performing related work
